So I have always been very into the genre. and lately I have had an itch to watch or read something new, or just new to me. I have avoided a lot of recent science fiction because I feel like Hollywood has diluted the genre to a colorless dystopian and frankly boring portrait. I prefer my science fiction to have a lot of color and personality. For example, The original Total recall has a lot of color and over the top characters, and even better alien designs. In comparison the remake went for a super sleak and dare I say Apple or google look? The style I guess was (not created by but) perfected by Stephen Spielberg with films like Minority Report. And it's dull, ugly, and that just lacks everything that I have ever loved about science fiction. I haven't watched Elysium because it seemed to feature the same look and style, hell everything he has ever done looks like that from Chappie to D9. So to me I just can't even enjoy them. Conversly I have heard nothing but bad reviews for Jupitor Ascending, and frankly I cannot stand the wachowskis, but they have to same approach to science fiction that I have. Sure Speed Racer was truley terrible, but an effort was made to be over the top and colorful. I've heard that there are furries and other ridiculous things in Jupiter Ascending and that to me exemplifies what I love about the genre. I prefer the 5th Element and Firefly approaches over the new dull stylized. And lets not forget cheap campy b attempts or the timeless classics such as The Day The Earth Stood Still.
So do you have a science fiction favorites? What era? Why do you love them and how much would you recommend them to me?

total recall 1990 is one of my all time favs, saw it in the cinema four times, pirated the home video rental release, bought the dvd and got the HD version on my PS3 total recall 2012 is complete garbage, bored me to death and has NO REDEEMING FEATURES WHATSOEVER
star trek TMP is THE trek movie chappie is great, speed racer is colourful and sleek and is actually fun not seen jupiter ascending yet, neither cloud atlas either, under the skin is wonderfully weird and sexy loved the old stuff too from the grand daddy 2001 AND 2010, to the day the earth caught fire and close encounters ..... dark star and dune are also massive favs of mine not seen minority report too many times though bought firefly blind and really enjoyed the series and the movie
my first sci fi series i ever saw was STAR MAIDENS in the seventies, and the giant of SPACE 1999, and loved the recent adventures in defiance / falling skies / extant / under the dome / killjoys / dark matter and a lot of others ones
there that should do for now

I watched the first season, er most of it. Was dating my wife at the time and lost interest in the show. And I did forget to mention in the OP that I haven't watched Dune. I have heard the book is a lot better. under the Skin was really trippy, but wonderfully shot.

Tetsuo: The Iron Man is a trip. I've seen it twice and still have no clue what it's about. a guy shoves pipes in his leg and turns into a tank, otherwise japanese saw it when it was on tv more than a decade ago, saw it's sequel too, but was much more saner

My two recent favourite sci-fi movies are Edge of Tomorrow and Looper, though they lack the colourful aspect. But they do both share awesome time-travel shenanigans and Emily Blunt.

For the actual topic, I'm not entirely sure what you mean by saying Sci Fi is too dystopian and not colorful currently. Science Fiction on the whole is a pretty dark genre, and it doesn't push itself too often as being kid friendly. Sure Total Recall is over the top (I mean it stars Arnold of course it is), but that's more of an anomaly rather than an example. There are a pretty decent number of good to great Sci-Fi movies the last several years...
Under the Skin Dredd Ex Machina The Martian Edge of Tomorrow Interstellar Looper Gravity Rise/Dawn of the Planet of the Apes Pacific Rim (this fits the more colorful side you described I guess) Snowpiercer Upstream Color Predestination Attack the Block Universal Soldier: Day of Reckoning Source Code
And that's pretty much just the last 5 years.

interstellar was too reliant on it's numbers and science than getting it's script together, saw ex machina and thought it was a good tech demo, same with snowpiercer saw BOTH dredd's last week and enjoyed both a lot, please make one with judge death!

Sure Total Recall is over the top (I mean it stars Arnold of course it is), but that's more of an anomaly rather than an example. What I mean is that there is an influx of films with an dull look. I'm using the word to describe the genre in it's true meaning, but rather using the word to describe the look and appearance. Lack of colors. Sure stuff like 1984 and others help to define science fiction, but I like the Battle Star Galacticas, the Star Wars', the Masters of the universes, Firefly, Cowboy bebop etc. Lots of colors, and characters. When it's part of an overall plot, like a dystopian such as 1984 then the whites, and pale grays and stuff makes sense. But a movie like Total Recall which was originally vibrant appearing so dull in the remake is just boring. if that clears things up. also I am wondering what are the best expanded universe books to read for Star Wars set after the original trilogy.

I strongly encourage any sci-fi fans to check out the current Transformers comics. Some of the best comics I have read in my 30 plus years of reading.
As for other good sci-fi comics, I recommend the Marvel Star Wars stuff (it's all decent but the Darth Vader series is freakin awesome), X-O Manowar, Copperhead, and of course Saga.

In terms of books, Alfred Bester's The Stars My Destination is fantastic and very influential.

The 1969-1976 sci-film era is interesting to me, because 2001 had raised the bar artistically, but filmmakers and studios hadn't quite figured out how get much investment or big returns on their movies; thus you get this period where there's clear attempts at doing some new and interesting things with sci-fi stories, but not quite the budget or scope to wholly realize them. So you have the vestiges of the Apes franchise, Andromeda Strain, THX, Solaris, ZPG, Soylent Green, Westworld, Logan's Run, and the Man Who Fell to Earth; varying in quality but all clearly reaching for some creative stuff.
The one two punch of Close Encounters and Star Wars swept many of them from popular consciousness, and the success of Alien would be a continuing sign of the sci-fi blockbusters that would dominate the 80s. Star Trek: TMP is in a lot of ways the last vestige of this period, a high concept movie which (whatever issues I have with its pace, story, and character use) did reach for something pretty out there in terms of content and as TOS films go, exists in its own little bubble outside the rest.
