Looking for either a good strategy game (Any style really) or an RPG game with a good story and characters.
Not looking to spend much so must be fairly cheapish. Anyone got any suggestions?
I'm considering Undertale, if anyone has played that?

Rimworld is a good strategy game. Its a colony simulator on an alien planet. Factorio is also a good strategy game. Your the evil alien building a polluting factory and taking over a world. Its very addictive.
I own both and really enjoy them. They are both in Alpha though.
As for RPG's..well the Final Fantasies seem to be half price last time I looked.

I've heard really great things about Planescape: Torment if you don't mind older games, with its characters and story being its strong suit. Haven't played it myself yet though. www.gog.com/game/planescape_torment

Strategy? RPG? Cheap? I can't recommend Battle for Wesnoth strongly enough. It's a freeware tactics game with RPG elements (your units gain levels and can learn new skills). It comes with several different campaigns set in the same universe and if you want more, there is a shitton of user-created content to download. And speaking of that, it's incredibly easy to create your own stuff for it as all you need is any text editor (yes, even notepad). Even if you want to change the graphics, since it uses pixel art, any image editing software will do.

xcom is a great turn based strategy game.
Either the original UFO Defense or the remake Enemy Unknown/Enemy Within.
I have heard good things about Hard West which is a turn based strategy game like X-com in the Wild West.

I always like to bring attention to an oldie-but-goodie Master of Orion 2. It's a fun mix of sci fi, Civ, galactic conquest, turn based ship battles with ships you can custom build.
I could spend hours talking about this game. Google it if you want to know more.

Strategy and RPG? Try Crusader Kings 2. It's on sale on Steam right now.
You guide a dynasty through the Middle Ages, trying to expand your realm, and manage marriage, diplomacy, war, religion, and whatever else you can think of. It's also got a heck of a modding scene, including total conversion mods for Game of Thrones and The Elder Scrolls. You'll have to sink a bit of money on DLC if you don't get it on sale, but it's a really fine game and it's so easy to get lost in.

Oh I will state Xcom Enemy Unknown is WAY easier than UFO Defense.
There is a lot less money management problems.

I will state the Unknown/Within have modern graphics and the rest don't.

Took a quick look at Steam, as it is the Steam Winter Sale
Knights of the Old Republic - $2.99 Knights of the Old Republic 2 - $2.99 Jade Empire - $3.74 The Witcher - $1.49 The Witcher 2 - $2.99 (Whole trilogy pack is $34.39!) Fable - $6.99 Morrowind -$6.79 Dragon Age: Origins Ultimate - $7.49
If any of these are gaps in your gaming experiencese I'd fill them.

Weeks on end playing this with every free minute I had. The GOT mod is absolutely insane as well. Can't recommend this game any more than what has been said.

I think what makes it so replayable is that no dynasty ever turns out exactly the same. You can pick the same exact character/realm in ten different playthroughs and get a completely different outcome every time. And that's before you take other things into account like where you marry your family members, what claims you press or don't press, what religion your dynasty follows, etc. There's an incredible amount of variables at work to keep things interesting no matter what.

Did they ever update KOTOR1 to work better on more modern OS's and Steam Workshop support for mods like they did with KOTOR2?
Anyway, KOTOR2 is fantastic, especially with the updates and being able to get the Restoration Content mod right off the workshop.
Also while it's more roleplaying shooter/action RPG, give Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines a go. Especially with the unofficial patch installed.

Dungeon Keeper's available on GOG.com and I heartily recommend that.

Undertale is really cool and worth playing, though it's very short so if you're looking for something to occupy you for a long time it's probably not going to do that. Still more than worth it though, in my opinion. Was entertained from beginning to end.

True, it's short, but also very geared towards multiple playthroughs, with stuff you will only see or have characters behave differently to acknowledge that, so it's not so bad. As for strategy, maybe Banner Saga?

It's also worth looking at these games: Vampire: The Masquerade - Redemption Diablo 1 (with Hellfire) Diablo 2 (With Lord of Destruction) Warcraft III Fallout 1, 2, and/or Tactics

Xenonauts is 60% off on Steam at the moment. It's a more direct descendant of the old X-Com games than the recent official ones.
And of course Civ 5 Complete edition is dirt cheap.

I believe the Total War games are on sale on steam right now. There's a bunch of them with different eras from the Roman period to the 18th Century. You get to control thousands of soldiers.

Kind of old school, but I can't recommend the Thief series enough.
