He was passionate, he called moves, and he sounded like a genuine sports commentator.
He'll be gone within the month.

He'll be mocked and ridiculed like that WWE writer who actually took the time to plan and storyboard angles.

I just watched Smackdown, specifically to see for myself this commentary
Best announcer I've heard on the Main Roster in quite some time. Made me despise King all the more being the buffoon next to him try to spoil it all...

I keep forgetting SmackDown isn't on Friday, anymore, so I missed it.

This guy is what I want out of commentary. If you were channel flicking and you heard this voice calling the action, you'd stop and pay attention, which is why commentary is SO DAMN IMPORTANT. They need to enhance the action and make things sound exciting, and he can do that.
I want him on Raw, but at this point I'm not sure who you could pair with him - heel Cole as a colour commentator alongside Mauro could potentially work. I quite liked heel Cole, but it was just that there was nobody there to counter-balance him when he'd go off on one as none of the others actually seem quite as intelligent or quick-witted as him, or in Lawler's case would sound like they couldn't really give a shit and would just groan exasperatedly at him. I think Mauro could potentially match with him quite well, like a JR/Heyman type thing

Cole was basically trained to do commentary while in the WWE, so his style is molded to WWE's desires. Mauro already has his experience and doing things the way he was taught. If anything, they will break Mauro down to do it their way, or he'll quit. Go back and check the work did on the Beast in the East special or Smackdown when Heyman had control, Cole is excellent. Hell, what we're getting in NXT and with Mauro is coming from Cole as well. There's also the televised house show Smackdown, in which both he AND JBL are great. They're as good as they were in their first run together on Smackdown on it.

It felt a little like I was listening to Jimmy Stewart do wrestling commentary. That's not a bad thing mind you.
I think he has decent chemistry with Byron, but man did Lawler stink that thing up.
And yeah, I think Michael Cole is underrated. But he's the lead guy on RAW so Vince is constantly in his ear. I think he'd be way more respected in the wrestling fandom if he was just able to do commentary his way.

He was great. He's got a strong voice, he sounded knowledgable and believable. That's the key one. He added a lot to the matches because he commited to them, and it didn't sound artificial or put on. He sounded authoritative. That hasn't been heard since Jim Ross. Cole is the shits, and there's been a parade of fine but blandly interchangeable commentators on the C shows and NXT, and this guy blew them all away in one show.
This actually makes me excited for the future of commentating. It's such a big part of the show and it's been lacking for so long. There needs to be a strong lead commentator and Michael Cole has never been it. He's occasionally reached "good" but mostly sticks to "crap", with way too much "flat out awful". This guy could be the future.
Mauro with Corey Graves as the colour commentator could be fantastic. They're believable, they can put over the talent, Corey can play a character that benefits the talents he insults, they can promote, and they both have good strong voices.
It was a strong start and I hope he stays strong. And I hope whoever is in his ear lets him stay on the same path he's on now.

Mauro has the manliest voice in existence. My speakers grew a mustache just listening to him for 10 seconds.

Where is Scott Stanford. He was fun with Punk. He's still a Sports Anchor in New York. WWE was always his second job.

People talk about Cole calling Beast in the East a lot, and he did do a nice job. But even that show, he wasn't as good as Mauro was on Smackdown, or any of his commentary for New Japan. It's a difference in approach: Cole is a former reporter, he's a "broadcast journalist". Mauro is a sports commentator, combat sports at that. That style fits the pro wrestling genre so much better. And of course it should, it's a simulated combat sport, not a news telecast.

He has the right tone of voice to call wrestling, and he calls the moves!
To me he is the perfect mix of Michael Cole and Matt Striker, but done correctly.
