Mike and Mike on ESPN have been killing Manning pretty much all morning. As is this First Take show right now Roger Goodell has to be figuring that if the NFL can get "Playmakers" cancelled for being overly critical of players' off-field antics, he can surely get "Mike and Mike" and "First Take" off the air for having the temerity to disparage the Prodigal Son.

Did Stephen A. Smith start his argument by saying "Now I like Peyton! He's a very good friend of mine! BUT..."?

Today is one of those days in which I can't criticize the Worldwide Leader in Sports for their coverage or lack thereof, because since "Mike & Mike" this morning, it's been a wall-to-wall condemnation of Peyton Manning and a systematic obliteration of his legacy as the affable everyman.

ESPN is complicit, though. They never mentioned this when they had as much knowledge of it as anyone. They're the ones who sold him as an affable everyman for decades. And now, their agenda (literally and figuratively) is to lambaste him on every show. I declare this a shit-show of the highest order. The company that employs Ray Lewis is going to drag up someone's shady past? The company that essentially put Favre on a pedestal post-dick pic lawsuit. After years of building Manning up, they're tearing him down not for his alleged lewd actions and smear campagin, but for ratings. Like they always do. They're every bit as deserving of criticism today as they are tomorrow or yesterday. They have the journalistic integrity of Perez Hilton.

ESPN has done this before with Tiger Woods and Lance Armstrong. And whether you like it or not, Peyton may have been showing that he has the integrity of Lance Armstrong.

He probably told ESPN to make sure that First Take did cover it. Cause then, if Skip Bayless and Stephen A. Smith were to suggest that this story is legitimate, everyone else in the world will think the opposite. Goodell is a master of reverse-psychology.

I don't give 3/4ths of half a shit about Peyton Manning. Or his "brand". Never have, never will. I just don't understand the grounds that people have to drag up things that have been common knowledge in less savvy sports circles than, say, the alleged "worldwide leader in sports". I'm not surprised that they will trash anyone to stir controversy, and less surprised that those people who they tear down are the ones they themselves built up to begin with. It's a cycle they do, and the uneducated masses just buy in. It's TMZ reporting, and yes, I think it's a non-story. MOST of the things ESPN talks about are non-stories. They make money off of building up the minutia. Pardon me for rolling my eyes at a story that surfaced 20 years ago. I found out about this as a 14 year old who belonged to ONE sports forum and had Yahoo search. It's a calculated ploy, and I just want people to stop acting like it's not. What else did people not know about? Leonard Little? Jerramy Stevens?

It goes a little deeper than that. I find this honestly surprising. This is why I backlashed on this story, but maybe people really don't know about the pasts of these guys. This is part of the problem. People always want to react before they see the whole story. I just don't like the too highs and too lows of sports journalism nowadays. Even now, ESPN isn't presenting this to people in a way they can digest. It's not taken seriously. It's tabloid mudslinging and Screamin A Smith and Skip Bayless ranting about these things only dilute the conversation.

If you read the report on Stevens rape accusal, which is even significantly more damning than that of Jameis Winston, you wouldn't simply just say he is a wife-beater.

Look, while you are getting mad out our "fake outrage", you are making fake outrage of your own against ESPN just because they are finally getting into this. What did you want? Did you want them to ignore this story? They have done that for days.
And if you are mad because the media built him up to now tear him down.........welcome to the media. This has always (and I mean always) done.

And they knowingly stepped around it to build Manning up, and now they're trashing him as much as anyone. But people aren't talking about that, they're talking about Manning. And I personally have never been a fan of Manning, and what he did at UT was awful. But that's 20 years ago, and now it's "news" for controversy sake. Because it's a down time in NFL coverage. I think that's worth saying. That ESPN is complicit in the cover-up, if you want to talk about brand and profile, and they're now leading the charge on his downfall. And all these people buy in because that's what they want. It's sick on all levels. Thank you for that news about the media though, never knew it!

It was not in the news cycle. That may suck but it's the answer. ESPN has had golf, tennis, track, football, basketball, Han interest spots aplenty to cover. They are in between college basketball championship season and the end of the super bowl, the NBA was on two day break. The story broke at the most opportune time for them and so yes they are going to run it into the ground and try to own it before fox, CNN, NBC etc can get it

I don't hate them for a business move. I hate that so many people take what they say at face value, and pick up their torches at whoever they're directed at today. I think we're all adults with brains and can talk about about these things honestly outside of this regularly scheduled trash fest. Bash Manning all you want, but doing it on ESPN's schedule to me seems silly.
