I absolutely loved the build-up to this feud. As a kid, I really thought Luger was accepting the money from DiBiase (especially since he wasn't far removed from his heel days).
Looking back, it was pretty obvious, but back then I was pretty shocked that Tatanka turned. I think they could've done more with Tatanka as a heel (or even as a face...he was really over during his undefeated streak).
I'd really like to see these kind of surprise turns in today's product. We knew Jericho would turn on AJ, but what if AJ turned on Jericho? Would've been interesting...

I feel like I was the only person at the time who pretty much knew Tatanka was turning and not Luger. It was Wrestling 101. Heel manager says top babyface is turning. Top babyface denies it. Babyface's friend gets mad and doesn't believe him, which is a real dick thing to do to your friend. Friend turns instead and reveals he was in on it the whole time.

I found it funny that WWE framed the feud as Tatanka being the heel because he turned on a jingoistic American superpatriot.
As if a Native American would have any obligation to such a person.

It was okay. I think that was meant for Mr. Perfect, but he was injured post-Mania so they went with Tatanka since he was a beloved face that would turn on the top face. I'm wondering, what Mr. Perfect with Dibiase as his manager be like?

I remember the angle fondly as a kid, but the match at SS 94 was pretty weak, and the heel turn did nothing for Tatanka's career.

Didn't they actually did a call in show where a fan brought up that Tatanka would sell out instead of Luger only to get cut off?

It would have been a more interesting feud if that was the motivation for Tatanka's heel turn than "Dibiase gave me whole lot of money!" I remember on WWF Mania the Saturday after that year's Summer Slam Todd Pettingell read a letter that a Native American girl supposedly sent in which she mentions how her and her grandfather really bonded over pro wrestling and took great pride in having one of their own in the form of Tatanka. And how him selling out to Ted Dibiase disappointed them and brought great shame. I always felt that added some depth to the heel turn than just an arena full of fans booing him now.

It was on that same show where Vince owned up to having twin referees. With Lawler and his "Royal Flusher". I wish I hadn't taped over that special because it'll probably never be on the network.

What show was that?
Anyways not sure I really liked the feud, and to be fair as a kid I actually dont think I saw it coming. I still think it should have been the other way around, Luger was the natural heel and Tatanka was a million miles better as a face. They should have had Luger accusing Tatanka only to turn himself, and Luger deface the American flag and start wearing dark green tights with dollar signs on them. It would have benefited both much better.. Luger can be a top heel, Tatanka couldn't, but Tatanka still could have gotten a high profile face push out of it and probably would have gotten more sympathy.
Luger then would have been a good feud for Bret, Diesel, Undertaker, Bulldog etc. While Tatanka vs those guys just didnt go.

The show was Summerslam Spectacular. It was like was like two TV hours of matches (Diesel/Typhoon, Luger/Crush for the bigger matches and a few random JTTS like matches). After the show they had a half hour or so portion of Vince and King speaking with fans. I think it was more an opportunity to start something between Mancow and King via the airwaves, IIRC.

Always felt heel Luger vs Bret should have been a program for the belt in the new Gen.

Tatanka wasn't a good heel, though - I never really thought he had much charisma anyway, but all he added as a heel was an awkward looking swagger and a 'trying too hard' scowl.

All too easy to forget what a big deal Tatanka was at the time. Dude was easily one of the top faces and was actually considered possible title material.

Luger should never have been a face. It just didn't suit him. He was too smug and arrogant to play the role. Luger should have turned on Tatanka.

Mostly because at that point I had watched enough WWF to to know that every time they had someone come out and claim someone else was turning that person was about to turn. I mean I was only 12 but it wasn't hard to figure out.

I remember just not caring when Tatanka turned heel. Normally as a kid my reaction would of been "OH NO" but I just thought oh well, which was strange as I did like Tatanka.
