I'm amazed at how well this movie's doing. That is one thing I'll give a ton of credit to Marvel Studios for: they make even the C-List and D-List comic book characters into real stars, in turn raising those more obscure characters' popularity in the comics. And seemingly unlike DC, they're not afraid of their popularity butting into the territory of their A-listers. Black Panther and Guardians of the Galaxy were never even close to the same level of popularity as the Captain Americas, Iron Mans, and Spider-Mans of the Marvel Universe. But they were in some really well done movies, word spread, and now they're massively popular. Hell for that matter Iron Man and Thor also got boosts too. Sure they were popular and people knew of them prior to their films but they weren’t on the level of say Spider-Man, Hulk, Captain America, or the most popular members of the X-Men. That’s the real success of the MCU, they had to start out without some of Marvel’s biggest overall properties. To frame it another way, it would be like making a cinematic universe with the wrestlers of the Attitude Era, but you don’t have rights to Stone Cold, the Rock, Undertaker, or DX, but instead gotta work with guys like Mankind, Chris Jericho, and Kane, characters that very much are over, mind you, but the bulk of your flag bearers are upper midcard/reliable main eventers, rather than the white hot cash cows.

Like, if anyone else pitched “Man who can’t cook gets controlled by rat who loves food and knows how to cook amazing dishes”, they’d get laughed out of the room. Ratatouille didn’t work out half bad for them considering.

"Boy steals a guitar and then meets dead people" doesn't sound too amazing on paper. but Coco blew me away.

Controversial opinion incoming it seems...I wasn't that impressed.
I certainly wouldn't call it a bad film; I think overall it was entertaining. I thought it looked fantastic, really interesting designs across the board. I liked Okoye and Shuri. Michael B. Jordan is a name I've heard over and over again but hadn't actually seen in anything, and that man oozes charisma. I thought the balance between humour and drama was a lot better than some of the recent Marvel films. Loved Stan Lee's cameo.
I also think from a cultural standpoint, it is very important for representation.
But I was not invested at all in the story, and it felt so by-the-numbers that half of the time it was like ticking check boxes. I think Superhero fatigue really set in with me on this one. The whole third act was very predictable, and I am so incredibly bored of the build up to the big fight at the end of a Marvel film. Black Panther himself was outshone by just about every character that spoke a line; I can't remember a duller main hero. Lupita Nyong'o felt really wasted. I don't like Martin Freeman. There was generous amount of cheesiness.
Like, overall I still would say it's ok, but the level of success it's achieving critically is just confusing me. Marvel has done much better films than this in my humble opinion, for this to be treated like it's changed the game is perplexing me.

Saw it yesterday. Enjoyed the film thought it was good. Liked the villains (Killmonger best villain since Loki.) and all the side characters.
Didn't think much of the Rhino Cavalry or the guy from that tribe doing a random 180 on T'Challa.
Is it the best Marvel movie ever? No but it is in my top ten.

So this weekend, it became the fourth film to top $100 million in its second weekend. By next weekend, it'll become the second highest grosser in the MCU, behind the original Avengers, in its third weekend. Its second weekend outperformed Justice League's opening, which is probably causing all sorts of screaming at Warner Brothers. This movie's success is amazing. If you predicted a decade ago that a Black Panther movie would far surpass a Justice League movie, you would have assuredly been laughed at.

To be fair, a decade ago The Dark Knight took a billion dollars. The idea that adding Superman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Flash, and Cyborg to the mix and it doing less than half at the box office would be unthinkable, never mind the idea that Marvel would go on to absolutely dominate the box office for the next ten years.

I've seen it three times so far and I'm blown away each time. But now I have that sinking feeling in my stomach because I know everything's about to go to hell in a handbasket.

WB built their shared universe on "Man of Steel", which is like building a house on a foundation of shit.

WB built their shared universe on "Man of Steel", which is like building a house on a foundation of shit. Starting with Man of Steel wasn't a bad idea at all. They panicked and tried to keep up with Marvel instead of doing a Man of Steel sequel or following it up with The Batman, then Wonder Woman, and maybe even Aquaman afterwards. Then they could've did World's Finest and Batman vs. Superman.

Let's shoe horn that bleak, grim tone into a Superman movie even though it doesn't fit at all so when we start making Batman movies again everybody will love it like they love Batman. Think about it, it's like Batman, but with the other guy. See what I'm saying, BATMAN RULES!!!!!!!!!"

I get what they were trying to do and honestly I think it could've worked with Superman if they kept him as the ideal, good natured, and moral upstanding hero in a dark and bleak situation if they took their time with it and built him up as that beacon of hope. But they just panicked and didn't want to put it in the time and effort with the story development.

The fact that a truly unknown/unproven Marvel superhero outgrossed Justice League is all the more reason for heads at DC/WB to roll. This definitely shouldn't have happened at all.

Marvel achieved in one movie with Steve Rogers exactly what DC have failed to do with Superman in two and a half movies. They did at least manage to do it with Wonder Woman. Hopefully Man of Steel 2 continues to use the Superman seen in the third act of Justice League.

Okay, now hypothetical question here. Say if they kept the tone intact and yet portrayed Superman as the beacon of hope, kind, obviously strong, brave, and honest while still keeping the Nolan tone. Would it have worked in that case?

I was talking to my manager that an unknown/unproven Marvel superhero destroyed Justice League's box office intake and it's only been out for a week. There's no way Batman vs. Superman or Justice League should've struggled in the box office. I see now just how bad DC/WB messed everything up with their panicked state and trying to compete with Marvel.

Mad respect with how the villain went out in the movie.
This was a perfectly well written villain(the heroes too with Nadia) about social problems. He has legit gripes with society, lived with it his whole life, it doesn't come off as preacy or one dimensional, when you spoke to him speak, you listened because he knew what he was talking and he was charismatic. But at same time the issue he had is that he was a radical violent angry.warmonger.
And he kept his conviction till his last moment.
The actor also nailed it.One of my top 5 or 3 Marvel villains.
