Glad to see amazon actually shipped out my preorder for 3D Allstars.I’m surprised they didn’t cancel it.

I'm feeling very split on whether to play Sunshine or Galaxy first. I did a 100% run through of 64 like two months ago, so it's out; of the three it's been the longest since I played Galaxy and it's my favorite of the three while Sunshine is certainly my least favorite of the trio (though I do still really enjoy it), but I generally prefer to play the Galaxy games back-to-back (I think they work best as a pair, they each do a lot to shore up the other's weaknesses) and I've already rounded up the stuff to play Galaxy 2 so if I do Galaxy first then I'll have to drop everything to play the Wii then get back to the Switch which would just be weird.

See, I'm of the opinion it's better to let some time pass between Galaxy and Galaxy 2 so there's no accidental burnout.
Then again, that's only because I would 100% both versions of Galaxy 1...

Kind of the big difference there I think - I only bothered doing the Luigi stuff the one time. Otherwise I go straight from 100% as Mario to Galaxy 2.

Still gonna wait a bit here. I do want to play Galaxy, but I'm not in the mood for 3D platformers at the moment. Plus I've beaten 64 already this year and I'm just wishy washy on Sunshine.

I'm also split on what to play first. More than likely it'll be Galaxy or Sunshine. Haven't played Sunshine ever (not because of the polarizing reviews or anything, I was just really late on playing the Gamecube so I never got a chance to play it) and the last time I played Galaxy was on launch.

Playing Sunshine and it's kind of perpetually surprising just how insanely linear this game is despite the illusion of a similar structure to 64. I like a lot of things about the game but they made a lot of absolutely bizarre choices for a Mario 64 follow-up.

So yeah, playing Galaxy in handheld mode is an adventure in itself because you need to multitask with using the directional stick to move yet use the touch screen to grab star bits or grab onto the blue stars. Good news is that at least in handheld, once you latch onto one of those magnetic stars, it'll automatically keep you on the magnet until you press another one. You don't have to hold down A in that mode.
EDIT: Also, not playing this for 13 years, whoa do I need to get used to the physics again because man my head is spinning just a little, hahaha.

Does Sunshine let you toggle off the invert on the Y axis in this version? Because I tried going back to playing it on the GameCube, and I just couldn't get used to the invert.

It feels like basically the extent of the changes is R / ZR for the different sprays and them clumsily muting the audio about them during the tutorial.

Apparently saying, "Sunshine starts out slowly and handcuffs you into doing very particular Shine Sprites in a very particular order," is a controversial opinion despite being the consensus on the game for nearly 20 years. Made a largely positive thread on GameFAQs where I said that as a problem I have with the game and people've been riding my ass all morning about it.

See, that's your first problem: You posted a thread on GameFAQs.

So I've been playing Galaxy since my digital pre-order of All Stars became available.
I am already annoyed at the Ray Surfing mini game, trying to control that thing on the Switch is a pain in the ass.

Why do you think speedrunners wedge a coconut between Mario and the Gelato Beach cabana roof? I love Sunshine but the linearity is it's greatest weakness.

I think of one of the factors that affects my perception of Sunshine vs something like 64 for me is a sense that the latter is packed with every element and aspect the developers could think of while the former feels a bit more incomplete and unfinished. Not in a glitchy or bad design way; more that Sunshine is brimming with some incredibly cool ideas that just don't entirely feel like they reach their potential.
FLUDD for example controls so well and allows for such a depth of movement and platforming challenges, but the lack of additional nozzles or even sections that would allow the use hover, rocket, & turbo interchangeably feels like a waste. A voice acted Mario game could be interesting, but gets utilized for an incredibly goofy story that doesn't feel it adds much. Yoshi plays decently okay, but is oddly limited by the fruit and water gimmick that never changes or evolves into something more. The range of shine missions is interesting but hampered by the rigid adherence to exact structure.
Sunshine in many ways is a better game than 64, but whenever I play it, I can't help but wonder what might have been; more so than I do with 64 which camera/control issues aside, still seems like the fulfilled promise of 3D Mario.

There is a loooot about Sunshine that screams that they shipped it unfinished. The Blue Coins reek of padding, they love to do missions where they can just repurpose a small section of the level from previous missions particularly for red coin ones, other parts of the levels serve basically no purpose and are completely empty, Gooper Blooper is so easy that it's like nobody playtested him yet he's the most recurring boss, Yoshi is almost entirely worthless, the alternate nozzles are pretty worthless too, there are a lot of Shine Sprites that are so obscenely unfair it's hard to believe they properly playtested them... Honestly it'd be really interesting to see what it and Wind Waker would be like if they weren't rushed to meet a deadline. They're both great games (Wind Waker's one of my favorite Zelda games, it's either it or Majora's Mask most likely) but you can see the seams in both and they both could've been so much better.

FLUDD has a lot of missed potential. The extra nozzles are not only very situational, but players have figured out how to bypass most of the "gates" those nozzles are for, due to how the Hover Nozzle is so versatile. Heck, aside from breaking down some doors in Deflino Plaza, I don't even think you would use the Turbo Nozzle in a stage. Also, there were too many red coin missions, and an absurdly large amount of blue coins throughout the game world. I felt like, at one point, there were more areas planned, or mission structures, but they had to meet a deadline, and just polished what they had instead.
