I'm calling it now: At some point in the 24 hours after Raw airs, WWE PR will release a statement of some sort apologizing to their viewers across the globe for something or another that happens on the show. If WWE ever plans to truly go global like they're currently attempting, they *have* to ditch this sort of thing and mentality. Not going to happen until Vince dies. I honestly think he doesn't get that most of the rest of the world hates Americans.

I'm about as red-blooded, go USA as it gets and even I cringe at any USA vs The World stuff.
We are not all like that, you guys.

I don't get whats so wrong about an american company doing a stupid gimmick to celebrate an american holiday. Because I don't trust WWE not to do some "USA beats up the rest of the world" crap and be overbearing about it on commentary. Because I'm just generally tired as a non-American of how WWE keeps going back to the well of these stories and celebrations that completely alienate their sizable international fanbase. If this was something they were doing as like a dark match on the show then cool, that's great. Open Raw on a fireworks show? Sure, whatever, pretty lights. But this is something that's going to be broadcast in 180 countries and 25 languages, and for as much as they like to brag about being a world entertainment company, they do this often enough that it comes off like they either don't understand what people outside of the US think about when they do this--and sure, this time it's because Raw falls on the 4th of July, but then there's stuff like the Cena/Rusev feud becoming America vs. Russia like people haven't spent the past 30 years laughing at the glorious absurdity of Rocky IV)--or just don't care. But it's just as much what they're doing as it is how much they're going to lean on it as more than just "a match to celebrate a day" and more "look at how great America is by way of 'our' wrestlers beating a bunch of foreigners". I doubt it's going to be that big of a deal. It's a novelty one-off match and anyone "important" is probably going to be far away from this thing. And both teams will probably have a mix of faces and heels, so it's not like they can go "America is the good guys and everyone else is the bad guys".

You severely underestimate the horrible powers of JBL, then.

I'm honestly stunned at all the negativity towards something so innocuous, something that will have no bearing on the product after Monday. Goofy stuff like this is par for the course in pro wrestling, it's not that deep. A patriotism-oriented match on a July 4th Raw is both predictable and harmless.
The worst thing that happens is that the American team squashes everyone and we get lots of 'Murica f*** Yeah commentary. The most likely thing is that we get a long tag match with a hot crowd that ends up being pretty good. If I was watching a UK or Japan or Canada based company putting on a show that falls on a patriotic holiday in their country, I wouldn't be alienated by a similar scenario. My reaction would probably be "haha, that's cute."

Could be a way to turn someone heel by costing team USA the match, betraying your country on the 4th July wouldn't be the worst start to a heel run. Did someone say betray their team? Sounds like a job for the Big Show.

This could be interesting, especially if they have faces and heels on both teams, for example:
Team USA: John Cena, Dolph Ziggler, Apollo Crews, Big E, Baron Corbin, The Miz, AJ Styles, and Bray Wyatt VS Team World: Kevin Owens, Sheamus, Alberto Del Rio, Rusev, Sami Zayn, Cesaro, Kofi Kingston, and Kalisto

So, wait, does Swagger comprise the entirety of Team America or turn heel after getting left off?

They go heavy-handed and over the head with a club, and usually catastrophically offensive (see: JBL in Germany, the Finlay/Miz situation, the Jericho flag deal, etc) 2. WWE is trying to go global. The above is the exact reason it will backfire. They're going to find some way to piss off potential customer bases.

Throw Sheamus, Del Rio, Owens and Zayn on the World team, they'll walk/brawl off letting the US have an easy victory and setting up matches for later in the night. US gets the rah-rah win, no one looks bad and we all forget by Wednesday.
