My rankings and comments:
1. Devin Townsend Project - Hyperdrive
2. The Raconteurs - Carolina Drama
3. Walk The Moon - Next in Line
4. Banks - Brain
5. Marvin Gaye - I Heard Throught the Grapevine
6. Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds - Into My Arms
7. Neil Young - Needle and the Damage Done
8. Milk Carton Kids - As It Must Be
9. Disturbed - Shout 2000
10. Parson James - Waiting Game
11. Mountain Goats - Going to Georgia
12. Neon Hitch - Wannabe
Banks - Brain
Nnooo! Not a cute girl with a deep voice singing a sad song! My one weakness except for all my other weaknesses! In all seriousness though, it is a very nice song and I've got to applaud this woman for pulling off the "quivering voice" style as I think most of the time, it's just grating.
Devin Townsend Project - Hyperdrive
I really like this sort of music. Very quiet yet driving and extremely emotional, I admire artists like that who can make so much with such simple tools.
Disturbed - Shout 2000
It's not a bad song or anything but it feels very generic. In fact, it would have been a pretty good fit for the "cookie cutter" round. Again, I don't mean it in a bad way but I feel it's a bit too safe a choice for this level of competition.
Marvin Gaye - I Heard Throught the Grapevine
Lots of emotion and energy in this one, which I like, although I feel like perhaps Gaye could have put more work into really adapting the song to an acapella version as this really sounds like a regular song with the instruments removed. Of course, this being Marvin Gaye, his singing is still great, but I feel it could have been greater still.
Milk Carton Kids - As It Must Be
This seems heavily inspired by 60's English pop, which I like, but this lacks the individuality that the best bands of this type have, giving their own twist on the genre. It's a pleasant song but not a memorable one.
Mountain Goats - Going to Georgia
It's one of those songs that's hard for me to talk about because it just doesn't do much for me. I don't really like it but it's not bad enough for me to get mad at it. It's just kind of... heh.
Neil Young - Needle and the Damage Done
Very intense song about a topic I'm sure many musicians, especially in Young's time, are sadly all too familiar with. However, I don't think the melody really captures the emotion intended by the singing.
Neon Hitch - Wannabe
That... was awful. Every single second of this song was just so obnoxious. They took a song that, yeah, was pretty cheesy but still a hell of a lot of fun and mutilated it beyond recognition.
Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds - Into My Arms
I was really not sure where this song was going after the first line but it turned out to be very beautiful. It's a real weird one too but I've got to say, it gives it a certain honesty that makes it appealing.
Parson James - Waiting Game
I've had a very difficult time getting into this song as it feels rather... manufactured, for lack of a better word. It's like someone made a checklist of things that pander to people's emotions and just followed it. It's like James wanted to make a sad song but didn't actually feel anything behind it.
The Raconteurs - Carolina Drama
A pleasant surprise. It started in a way that made me think it was going to be a boring one but as I kept listening, it became increasingly good and I ended up very fond of it.
Walk The Moon - Next in Line
Much like the previous one, the song gets better as it goes. That said, while I like it a lot, it doesn't quite reach the same standard. Still good enough for a high ranking, though.
