Sent my rankings in and I found this to be an interesting round, as it shows how people play the game and was of a particularly high quality, imo. So, a couple of things to announce. It wasn't necessarily clear, but after this round, there will be an elimination sing-off. Barring a tie, we will then be down to the top ten contestants. The next three rounds will be added together and culminate in a double elimination. There will be a three-way sing-off for the elimination after the three rounds, so no one (cough, Mangum) will just be eliminated. It's also time to announce Round 18's theme. It's a good idea to allow for a bit of time for this one, as it may prove to be a bit challenging. This Round idea comes from Judge Spiderfab4 and you could say that it plays off of a proverb. Round 18's theme is... (Ramones tribute band the Gabba Gabba Heys) The Sincerest Form of FlatteryChoose 1 song where the artist or group either:Sounds like another artist or group
or
Tries a different musical genre or sub-genre than what they are typically known forFor both choices, the song can have a very straightforward, obvious influence, like an artist having a song that takes its cues from, say, Black Sabbath or the song can be a little less obvious than that and have a more subtle influence. The song can be influenced by a particular period in an artist or band's career, like a band influenced by a classic rock band's psychedelic era. The different musical genre option can have the artist clearly making a song in that genre, i.e. a metal artist going alternative rock or a hip-hop artist going Latin, etc. or the artist can borrow aspects of a sound, like a punk song going a little country or a rock song having an electronica or dance feel.

SONGS DUE FRIDAY AFTERNOON What in [insert preferred deity here]'s name would take someone SIX days to choose ONE song? ONE song. Are we *trying* to stomp the last bit of air out of what's left in the game? One song. Six days for that?? {Spoiler}{Spoiler}That's only one number above zero, which requires doing nothing.

I'm no math major, but the time between today and Friday is four days (counting today). It was posted yesterday. Because this has dragged on so long I actually thought it was Sunday that it was posted. Monday - 1 Tuesday - 2 Wednesday - 3 Thursday - 4 Friday - 5 One song. Pick a song. Post them. Get them to judges. So not a math major maybe, but simple concept of turning in a song seems to be made into rocket science. That being said, I respect people's need to think. But I've also been on the other end of plenty of these games and I'd bet anything I can tell you what participants are holding everything up. Some of them even have a knack for "liking" posts about reserving the right to take forever to play the game. It's just a difference of opinion, that's all.

Sorta confused . There is a current singoff now and their will be another one after the round 18 category ? There's a sing-off in progress and then we'll have a double elimination sing-off after three more rounds. I want to say we did something similar a few seasons ago, but I'd have to check. So, it would be an elimination round, where we'll get down to ten players. Then three more rounds, where the three players with the lowest combined totals for those three rounds will meet in a sing-off, where two of them will get eliminated. We would then have eight players.

Round Rankings. I felt this was an excellent round and a good way to lead up to the next part of the game. Pentatonix - Run to You Alanis Morissette - Perfect Crosby, Stills and Nash - Helplessly Hoping Television - Guiding Light Kendrick Lamar - How Much Does a Dollar Cost? Weezer - Falling for You Alice in Chains - Dam That River Carcass - Heartwork Lauryn Hill ft. D'Angelo - Nothing Even Matters Amy Winehouse - Wake Up Alone (Live) Neutral Milk Hotel - Holland, 1945 I'll add a bit of an overview for my rankings. I'll try to do that more in the future; I was giving more of a detailed critique but, honestly, it would take me a while to do and I felt kind of blah keeping it up. So, I think the contestants did well to avoid maybe some of the more obvious picks. One thing that could have happened this round is for players to stick to some very high profile albums and select songs from them. There's nothing wrong with that, but the round could have easily turned into a Rolling Stone top 200 list in terms of albums and would have been less interesting to listen to judge. Pentatonix won first place for me because it took a huge risk, as songs in this mode haven't necessarily done well. I thought it was the strongest song due to its complexity, overall sound, and the various high points it reached. The group members worked perfectly together and I felt those who were essentially the rhythm section stole the performance for me. That it also attained a high emotional level was very impressive. Alanis Morissette was number two for me because it felt like a supporting song from an album and not a chart topper. It had a depth to it and Alanis's inimical singing style was a perfect fit for the the instrumentation of the song. Her voice was beautiful but strange and she took vocal risks here that less confidant singers would not have chosen. Crosby, Stills, and Nash was simply breathtaking. They achieved some of the best harmonies I've ever heard and this was a song that presented all their strengths. I wasn't sure where to put this initially, but it had to be in my top three. The only thing I could argue is that the song is a little bit of a predictable pick, as that entire album is majestic, but it was such a winning performance that it had to be rewarded. Television made me smile because I'm a huge fan of their sound. It was cool to see it in a round without Knailsic . I loved the musical knowledge at display and it was a song from the height of their musical power. The only thing that may have took it down a notch is that it isn't necessarily a stand-out song for Television, like Venus, for example. It shows that they were on the forefront of the New York music scene at the time, but it blended a bit with their other songs. Still, marked out to see them. Loved the Kendrick Lamar song. It ran a tad long for me, but I found the story of the song compelling and the overall performance to be beautifully done. It felt complex tonally, like Waffle's song in the first round. I found myself enjoying it quite a bit. I chuckled at the Weezer song's inclusion because I felt that the player really hit the nail on the head for the round theme. Maybe it was too obvious for me, but I felt it had a sound squarely for that time and I mean that as a complement. I have friends that swear on Pinkerton all the time and I'm fond of that record. The Host was a bit surprised at my ranking, but I felt it was somewhat of an expected song for the round and it didn't particularly wow me. Very solid, nonetheless. The Alice in Chains song was another that I felt was a bit predictable. I love Alice in Chains, but I felt that some of the strength of their harmonies was a bit lost in this song. The round sets a few limitation on what could be selected so, in a sense, its logical that one of a band's less prominent songs would end up chosen. There's great emotions on display here but I don't think the song held up against some of the more adventurous songs in the round. The Carcass song took enough of a risk for me that it couldn't end up in the bottom. I feel that the song was inspired throughout most of the performance, but the guitar work didn't blow me away. I enjoyed the rhythm section, but I felt that the vocals were an obvious weak point. You either love the style or you don't, but the growling felt off to me. The overall sound works, but the music outshines the vocals. Still, I appreciate that a less obvious pick was used. D'Angelo's vocals were what stood out the most in the Lauryn Hill selection. I feel that the song, like the Weezer song, fit the theme very well and, while it wasn't too surprising to see the song, I liked its inclusion. The vocals, altogether, are wonderful but the song's too long and repetitive for me. I wish there was more going on in the production and that the two vocalists interacted more. I was a bit let down by her vocals, tbh. I didn't find the Amy Winehouse performance to be particularly inspiring. She does things, vocally, that are impressive, especially when it comes to conveying emotion, but I felt that the performance was a bit downcast over all. It lacked energy or even a tiresome quality that would translate to a strong performance. I don't think going live was a good idea here. The music also didn't quite match up with her singing. Finally, the Neutral Milk Hotel song had to be ranked last because it explicitly didn't follow the round rules. It's a good song from them, energetic and strange in their mode, but it's not as strong as, say, the King of Carrot Flowers. It had too much dissonance for me and that couldn't make up for the rule infraction.

Television pick was solid. Nice play off of the "influential album" requirement. Outside the box, yet inside the parameters. Well played.

Some of them even have a knack for "liking" posts about reserving the right to take forever to play the game. It's just a difference of opinion, that's all. Calm down, mate. This sort of aggressivity is completely unnecessary. Anyway, here are my rankings and comments for this round. 1. Weezer - Falling for you 2. Television - Guiding Light 3. Amy Winehouse - Wake Up Alone (Live) 4. Carcass - Heartwork 5. Alice in Chains - Dam That River 6. Kendrick Lamar - How Much a Dollar Cost 7. Pentatonix - Run to You 8. Neutral Milk Hotel - Holland, 1945 9. Lauryn Hill ft. D'Angelo - Nothing Even Matters 10. Crosby, Stills & Nash - Helplessly Hoping 11. Alanis Morissette - Perfect Alanis Morissette - Perfect I'm not a big fan of Alanis Morissette to begin with as I find her to be one of those singers who does everything technically right but doesn't have a lot of personality. And yeah, that's pretty much how this song feels to me. Alice in Chains - Dam That River Hallelujah, Metal has returned to FAN Idol! And it's a reammy dam good one too (GET IT?!?!). Okay, it's not the most original song out there but it's very powerful and makes you want to get up and headbang. Amy Winehouse - Wake Up Alone (Live) Poor poor Amy Winehouse. She was as talented as she was tormented, wasn't she? And this song really shows it. She sings it beautifully while giving a lingering feeling of pain and sadness. Very moving. Carcass - Heartwork Damn! Metal really is back with a vengeance in this round! I really like it as at first I thought it was going one of those "are you impressed at how fast we can play our guitars?!" songs but there IS more to it and it's a pleasant surprise. Very risky choice and I don't know how well it's going to score with the other judges but I'm into it. Crosby, Stills & Nash - Helplessly Hoping Hm. It's very much one of those "I can't think of anything bad about it but it's not particularly good either" entries. It's something I could hear as background music without any complaint but I'd skip it if I saw it on a playlist. Kendrick Lamar - How Much a Dollar Cost This is some very good, high-quality rap with a haunting sound and a relentless energy. I'm not a huge rap fan but this is what the genre is all about as far I'm concerned. Unfortunately, it is slightly brought down by the autotuned parts which kind of clash with the rest of the song. Lauryn Hill ft. D'Angelo - Nothing Even Matters Gott say, it almost gets caricatural at times with how much it feels like a generic R & B love song full of "OooOOOooh yeah" that you'd hear in a soap opera when two characters are about to bang before the scene fades to something else. But you know what? Works for me. It's pleasant and the artists do a very good job with it. Neutral Milk Hotel - Holland, 1945 And now for something completely different! Stuff like this makes me realize just how much I actually like Folk Punk and this song in particular has a very unique sound that really strikes a chord with me. I do have to knock it off a few ranks due to actually being released as a single, sadly. Pentatonix - Run to You Very beautifully sung and a great example of a capella singing done right, with the various singers' voice being very harmonious. I do have a problem with it though, which is that it sits too much at the same level. Even when it does escalate, it doesn't last very long and stops abruptly, as if the song was trying to make up for it. Shame because these guys clearly don't lack talent. Television - Guiding Light Another one I really, really like. You can tell it's from the 70's but at the same time, it doesn't sound like anything else I've heard. I really like the quiet strength that emanates from it, a strange mixture of melancholy and optimism that I can very much identify with. Great stuff and very good choice for this round. Weezer - Falling for you I didn't know anything about Weezer before but this is one of those songs that really makes me want to check out more of them. It reminds me a lot of the ska punk that was very popular when I was a teen but more modern (which is rather surprising considering it was apparently released in 96) with maybe a slightly more metal feel to it. It could have fallen on its face but they really pull it off and I like it a lot.
