hahaha what
(No, seriously, what? The combination of U2's relative unpopularity in this game + going for a curveball with them made me think I was going down.)

You all have no idea how badly I wanted to pick "Fidelio" in its entirety for that last round. Because it fit the parameters cleverly AND it's a butt-kicking idea. But I figured one 1st place score and three last place scores was not an ideal way to begin this three-round series.

You got a few rounds left before the sing-off. I didn't help you out last round, but you tend to do low one round with me and then wow me the next. U2 - Zooropa The Cure - The Love Cats Kid Cudi - That New "New" Within Temptation - Ice Queen Marianas Trench ft. Anami Vice - Pop 101 The Coasters - Down in Mexico Genesis - In Too Deep The Babe Rainbow - Planet Junior Aaron Lewis - Country Boy Steven Tyler - Red White and You I'll add a bit more comment-wise when I can, but I thought this was one of the strongest rounds yet, with the top five or so impressing me deeply. The U2 song, in particular, is likely in my top five so far this season.

Well, I didn't see that coming! Thought that was going to be middle of the pack at best.

Right. Rankings, comments, you know the drill.
1. U2 - Zooropa 2. The Coasters - Down in Mexico 3. Within Temptation - Ice Queen 4. Kid Cudi - That New "New" 5. The Cure - The Love Cats 6. Genesis - In Too Deep 7. The Babe Rainbow - Planet Junior 8. Steven Tyler - Red White and You 9. Marianas Trench ft. Anami Vice - Pop 101 10. Aaron Lewis - Country Boy
Aaron Lewis - Country Boy
Oh wow. That was almost admirable in how stereotypical that was. It was seriously to the point that I wondered at times if this was done in earnest or as satire. I mean, it nicely sung and played but wow is this the very clichΓ© of the reddest of necks. I don't think it's going to be a shock but an overly patriotic country song that ends with a guy saying "I love mah country, I love mah guns" and a thinly veiled threat of violence against people who disagree doesn't exactly resonate with me. Seriously, this is the kind of stuff we'd write as a parody of an American Southerner over here, and people would probably think it's being overly stereotypical.
The Babe Rainbow - Planet Junior
And speaking of stereotypes, this one goes to the opposite extreme and is pretty much a stereotypical Hippie song... but this is a lot more my jam and I do like Hippie music, so that'll fare a lot better with me.
The Coasters - Down in Mexico
That was certainly not something I expected and I really liked it. Very creative and very catchy. Exactly the sort of things this game needs.
The Cure - The Love Cats
I actually don't know much about The Cure but this song certainly doesn't fit their reputation as the go-to "depressed teen" band, which of course makes this a perfect fit for this round. The song itself is very good to begin with so that works very well for me.
Genesis - In Too Deep
I do like me some Phil Collins and it's a very good song, but it feels a bit generic compared to the other entries (for better or for worse). I've said it before and I'll say it again, if you want to win, you can't play it safe at this point of the competition.
Kid Cudi - That New "New"
Not bad, not bad. It's not the most extraordinarily original rap I've heard but there's something about it I like. It's got a lot of heart and it's the kind of song that makes you want to dance and sing along to it.
Marianas Trench ft. Anami Vice - Pop 101
This one reminds me of "Panderin'" from a few rounds back, in the sense that parts of it work but overall, I find it lackluster and honestly, I think Panderin' worked a lot better. I understand that the idea is to parody pop music clichΓ©s but a good parody manages to create something new out of the old tropes whereas this just kind of indulges in them and doesn't really do much beyond explaining its own joke. Nope, doesn't work for me, sorry.
Steven Tyler - Red White and You
Another song that's brimming with patriotism but this one is a lot more fun than "Country Boy" to me. However, it remains a rather generic song so while it's entertaining, it doesn't fly very high for me.
U2 - Zooropa
That is indeed not the sort of stuff you'd normally associate with U2. And I know I've said it about a thousand times already but I really psychedelical music like this. It feels like a cross between Pink Floyd and some 80's German New Wave. And the mixture really ticks my boxes. Really good stuff.
Within Temptation - Ice Queen
Symphonic Metal?! Yes please! Really glad to hear some of that on FAN Idol. With that said, I think the song could be better than it is and that's mostly due to the singer's voice, which I find far too high pitched for this sort of exercise. In spite of that though, the song is still great and is going to score high with me.

At this point my last place vote is always coming from snake bite. It's like our favorite Frenchman says oh that must be Zs and boom bottom. Every time. Like I knew it before I even saw the pics. I don't think I've ever seen a judge always put me on the bottoms every time. But it's almost a given this game. Where is the love.

But yeah, I guess we must have polar opposite musical tastes.

Q: In the event of an auto-elimination, will the Sing-Off just be 1v1? The stated goal of this round was to get to final eight after all.
