Montezuma is one of my fave songs ever, honestly not sure why I didn't ever use it in an earlier season. Question about 1: Non-Traditional How long does the non traditional element have to be in the song, are we talking 15-20 seconds of a track or half the song or more. 15~ seconds is fine.

So hey, I know I've been eliminated, but I'd be remiss if I didn't tell you that I used Phillip Phillips earlier this season, so that song sure as hell shouldn't be allowed. Please continue. Just FYI. I misread the rules for that round. I thought we had to double dip an artist that this was the first time they'd been used. Hence the reason I used it. That's why if you look at my earlier post you would see I said that was a tough pick. It was much easier when I realized I just misread it. I wasn't trying g to like ignore your pick. But nothing to get so agitated about.

I actually did the same thing and misread the rule initially(ie i sent a song that was first used by someone earlier in the season)

Happens. I've had to elaborate on round ideas and rule stuff with spiderfab4 and the other judges because I didn't explain things well enough. The double dip rules could have been clearer. No harm, no foul.
Though, you guys know how it is, as the final four players have all judged in the past.

I just realized I forgot to post my rankings and comments on the previous round so here goes while I judge the current one:
Previously Eliminated Contestant Artists
1. Stone Temple Pilots - "Trippin' On A Hole In A Paper Heart" 2. Alice In Chains - "Man In The Box" 3. Belle and Sebastian - "Piazza, New York Catcher" 4. Big Star - "Thirteen"
Alice In Chains - "Man In The Box"
Really strong, heavy song and a classic but while I can't deny its place in musical culture, it is a bit overly simplistic to me.
Belle and Sebastian - "Piazza, New York Catcher"
It's a very pretty and pleasant song but again, I find it to baic to stand out. It might be due to this style of music being very popular among French artists so I hear a lot of it and unless they really do something unique, these songs end up all merging together to me.
Big Star - "Thirteen"
Gonna be honest with you, I was incredibly bored by this song. It's monotonous, it's placid, it's overly angsty and not in acompelling way, it just doesn't have anything to grab my attention.
Stone Temple Pilots - "Trippin' On A Hole In A Paper Heart"
Man, coudl this song be any more 90's? And I mean that in a good way, it's got a very interesting mixture of the punk and grunge that were very popular at the time and even a hint of Nu Metal. And as far as I'm concerned, it's a very tasty cocktail.
Top 4 Contestant Artists
1. The Black Keys - "Gold On The Ceiling" 2. Arcade Fire featuring David Bowie - "Reflektor" 3. Modest Mouse - "The World At Large" 4. Fleet Foxes - "Montezuma"
Arcade Fire featuring David Bowie - "Reflektor"
I am amazed that this song is from 2013 because it sounds like it comes straight from the 80's. As a result, it's got a pretty unique sound by today's standards but on its own, well, it's still good but not great. I also don't think it really needed to be seven and a half minutes long.
The Black Keys - "Gold On The Ceiling"
One of those songs where you can tell from the first few seconds how it's going to be. The first impression was good and the rest of it confirmed it.
Fleet Foxes - "Montezuma"
This just sounds weird. And normally, I appreciate attempts by a band to be different but this one comes off to me like it's trying too hard to be stylistic and as a result forgets to have substance.
Modest Mouse - "The World At Large"
Again we have something that I feel is putting more effort into its style than its substance but it does fare better. I actually wish this was an instrumental as those parts I really liked.
Not Used Yet Artists
1. Urban Dance Squad - "Deeper Shade Of Soul" 2. San Fermin - "Jackrabbit" 3. Jens Lekman - "Become Someone Else's" 4. The Japanese House - "Face Like Thunder"
The Japanese House - "Face Like Thunder"
Everything about this is so bland to me. It's got no style or substance. It really feels like something mass-produced in a factory. And the fact that it is incredibly repetitive does not help.
Jens Lekman - "Become Someone Else's"
Better, but not by much. It doesn't have the artificial feel of "Face Like Thunder" but is just as dull and repetitive to me.
San Fermin - "Jackrabbit"
Undeniably a step up from the other entries, it's more original and has more energy and life to it but it's really not something I would rate highly in any other round. It's just okay.
Urban Dance Squad - "Deeper Shade Of Soul"
Easily the winner in this categorry for me as indeed, this one has the most soul of them all.

No one said getting to the final would be easy, and taking on a former winner doesn't change that. Should be fun. Z-A Sandbaggin' Son of a b!%@h , best of luck. You've been playing great all season and I don't expect you to stop now. EDIT: WOW that was fast. Song is in.

Regarding that Car Seat Headrest song. (I didnt' rank them last) Really talented group and dig their sound, but holy crap, very sub-par stage presence.

One of the biggest bands in indie in the early-mid 2000s vs. one of the biggest bands in indie in the mid-late 2000s to today.
It's sorta perfect.
Good luck Z!

Goddamn that's not an easy sing-off. Frankly, I might as well toss a coin (note: I'm not actually going to just toss a coin, that would be incredibly unfair to the contestants).
Also, here are my rankings and comments for the last round:
Non-traditional
1. Jimi Hendrix & The Experience - "If 6 Was 9" 2. Jurassic 5 - "Swing Set" 3. Soko featuring Ariel Pink - "Lovetrap" 4. The Vogues - "Five O'Clock World"
Jimi Hendrix & The Experience - "If 6 Was 9"
I mean... it's Jimi Hendrix. Is there even anything for me to say? One of the greatest guitarists of all time, one of the best MUSICIANS of all time. Dude's just amazing and so is this song.
Jurassic 5 - "Swing Set"
This feels more like a soundtrack than a stand-alone song but I don't mind at all. It switches between genres and styles and does a very good job of it. There's a good example of how to break the coundaries and do it well.
Soko featuring Ariel Pink - "Lovetrap"
Another mixture of styles, this time with a more satirical feel and while it's still very good, I don't think it pulls it off as well as "Swing Set" does.
The Vogues - "Five O'Clock World"
Not bad at all but I think it pales compared to the other titles in the sense that they were more creative and generally more immersive.
LIVE
1. The Roots featuring Erykah Badu - "You Got Me" 2. Joe Cocker and Mad Dogs & Englishmen - "Space Captain" 3. Car Seat Headrest - "Fill in the Blank" 4. Mr. Bungle - "What The World Needs Now"
Car Seat Headrest - "Fill in the Blank"
It's weird, I feel like I should like this song more than I do. It resembles a lot of things I like and yet it just doesn't really do anything for me. Maybe it's just how bored and disinterested the singer sounds, which I'm sure is intentional but it's not for me.
Joe Cocker and Mad Dogs & Englishmen - "Space Captain"
I'm getting a similar thing here. There is an undeniable amount of energy and passion and the melody is great but for some reason, it just doesn't quite come together in the end. I do like it though and I think it works better than "Fill in the Blank", I just think it's merely good when it could have been great.
Mr. Bungle - "What The World Needs Now"
It's a song I've heard before and I never found it particularly great. I just don't find anything stand-out about it. It's not bad but it's really generic.
The Roots featuring Erykah Badu - "You Got Me"
Wow, really liked that one! I like the quiet, trippy melody and the vocals serve it very well. The changes in rhythm work well as does the contrast between the singers' styles.
WAY out of the comfort zone
1. Girls Aloud - "The Promise" 2. Zay Hilfigerrr and Zayion McCall - "Juju On That Beat" 3. Saves The Day - "Freakish" 4. Savages - "The Answer"
Girls Aloud - "The Promise"
It's got a bit of a girls band vibe, which makes sense, I guess, but what I really like about it is that it doesn't have the bland, processed feel that most of them do. They have a lot of personality and obvious talent.
Savages - "The Answer"
What a weird punk-ish thing. I can see why people might like that so I'm sure this kind of stuff will find its audience but I'm not part of it.
Saves The Day - "Freakish"
It's... okay. Really okay. I wouldn't mind if it played on the radio or someone's playlist or something but it's not something I particularly want to listen to either.
Zay Hilfigerrr and Zayion McCall - "Juju On That Beat"
And I can say pretty much the same thing here. It's not the worst Hip-Hop I've heard but it's nothing special, especially compared to "You Got Me" up there.

Good luck in the singoff ZA and Waffle, you both have used a lot of songs I liked this season, and the razor thin point margin btwn 2nd-4th is another example of how competitive Season 11 has been.

ZA, Waffel, please step forward.
By a vote of 2-2, we are tied.
I asked a judge for advice, and he gave me 3 options. I decided to tweak one of the options and call it Option 4.
Both ZA and Waffel must send me one more song for the sing off.
AND instead of another head-to-head, I want the judges to give me an overall ranking of ALL 4 songs.
The higher combined overall score of the contestant and his 2 songs will stay in the game.
Hopefully this will lessen the chance of another tie. IF somehow that score is a tie, I will make an executive decision one way or another.
Also, please don't reveal yet which one of you sent The National and which one sent The White Stripes.
