America decided they had their fill of lengthy downbeat dystopian arcs and decided they'd rather watch a cute fox and cute bunny be cute.

Honestly thought they concluded that series already.
I hate the trend of splitting out the final film in a series (or overly long film series in general).

I read that Allegiant flopped. I had the misfortune of seeing that in theaters, despite that I paid to see it with a movie pass. The movie sucked.

Not surprising with how badly the last one underperformed. Which is a good show of why you shouldn't do the multi-part movie thing without being certain the movie's going to deliver results that'll warrant it, so you aren't locked into doing a sequel to something that already lost money to begin with. CoughcoughJusticeLeague.

stopped after being utterly bored of the first one so nothing of value was lost

Honestly thought they concluded that series already. Nope, this was another case of the dreaded "split the last book into two parts"

Oh...It's called Divergent. I thought it was Detergent. And it was about a dystopian future where clean clothes were used as currency.

It was done with "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows," "Twilight: Breaking Dawn" and "The Hunger Games: Mockingjay." Now I have not read the Divergent books, but the movies were not great. The first one was just okay at best. The second one had some eye-rolling moments. The third one was just plain bad and the story was not over.

the last movie made 179 million on a 110 million dollar budget. So it made it's budget back but was nowhere near the conventional advertising budget. Nope, this was another case of the dreaded "split the last book into two parts" What is with this trend? Basically what ever was the first to do it was way too long to faithfully adapt and get all the important shit in. both of those movies made money. Hollywood is stupid. Hollywood decided that splitting all final movies will equal profit because there is an extra movie for people to see! Despite most novels you know... not having an ending point in the middle that could work.

It all depends, however. There was no guarantee that the LotR trilogy was definitely going to be a massive hit that would be worth more than many countries annual GDP, but they shot the movies as one prolonged shoot. This meant that they filmed 3 movies for less than Disney spent to make the last Star Wars movie (though perhaps a more fair comparison are the prequel movies, which were filmed around the same time as the LotR trilogy, where the $281M spent to make the trilogy would account for the budget for about slightly more than two Star Wars movies).

ouch. that's a whole kind of failure we don't even have a category for yet. It's at least less humiliating than how badly Atlas Shrugged failed, though that's one really low bar. "Going Galt!" indeed.

Compared to the other two movies (Divergent made $288 million on an $85 million budget, Insurgent made $297 million on an $115 million budget), it tanked rather badly.

At least it's been said that Avengers: Infinity War I + II will function as two different self-contained films, despite the Part I + Part II titling (though it seems they'll get distinct subtitles ultimately).

They are getting completely new titles Per the Russo Brothers so people don't get confused that they are one big movie split in two.
