Not to the same degree, but TNA's misuse and constant dicking around of AJ is this era's equivalent of Vern refusing to make Hogan his top guy. In Verne's case, he thought Hogan lacked the credibility and technical skills to be the world champion. Dixie held it against AJ that he never was a known name in WWF/E, WCW, or ECW. Like, I get the business sentiment of wanting to chase those big name free agents, but you legitimately have the biggest name to never enter the WWE under payroll, is loyal to you and wants to be your franchise man, and you literally go "f*** it, what have you done for me lately?" Something about that just doesn't make any sense.

They let him go, which is a level of stupid I can't comprehend, but it's made even worse by the fact that they booked him as a world beater on his way out!
Beat up Magnus. Beat up EC3. Fought off constant interference from what seemed like half the roster. Took multiple finishers.
They booked him as a star... on his last night for them.
It's the ultimate TNA move.

The only bit of minor defense I could have for that is they might have thought he'd go on the indies, not make as much money and then come crawling back to set up a long-term feud with Magnus with the contract they wanted him to sign in the first place. And then New Japan Pro Wrestling happened.
