Do people really expect the initial batch of reviews to be negative? These movies are like Marvel movies in the sense where it's just a given that most critics are going to give them good reviews regardless. Not saying that I think they're "paid off" or anything ridiculous like that, but I think a lot don't want to deal with the backlash with the fan base. We saw with Last Jedi that disagreements over these movies can unleash a total shit storm.

I remember when Donald Glover was just that nerdy dude from Community who was also a good standup comic. Now he's an absolute force in the entertainment industry in nearly every single aspect of it. Between him and Jordan Peele, it's been a really good time for guys I've been a big fan of. He's the epitome of the "jack-of-all-stats" trope.

Better than hearing its shit or the hyperbolic praise Marvel films tend to get.

I was pretty sad to see him leave Community but I hoped he would blow up doing something else. So glad for this dude, he’s amazing.

So it's not playing on nearly as many screens as this normally might due to Deadpool still making money. I wonder how much Solo will be hurt coming out so close to Deadpool.

If I remember correctly, every movie was postponed from May to December. This is the only one that's come out when it was supposed to and the next episode of the main series is supposed to come out next May.

Yup, The Last Jedi was originally scheduled for May 26th 2017, and Episode IX was originally scheduled for May 24 2019. Both this and Rogue One were released as scheduled.

First reviews I've heard for it parrot a point I've felt about a lot of comic book and franchise stuff like Star Wars of late: it's apparently quite good when it's doing it's own thing and just using the trappings and features of the Star Wars universe to tell a tonally and stylistically distinct story in its own way, but gets kind of "bleh" when it has to start acting like a Star Wars movie after the halfway point or so.

Honestly, this movie could be getting glowing reviews and praise from critics and theatergoers and I'd still be hesitant and entering the cinema with extremely guarded expectations. I just don't know how I'll be able to get past these two jabronis putting on Halloween costumes and cosplaying as Han Solo and Lando Calrissian.
It at least worked to an extent with the prequels because the timeline was distant enough from the original trilogy that we could believe these young people grew up to be Obi-Wan, etc. But these are just adults playing Han and Lando, who we already saw played by adults 40 years ago.

I just saw it and absolutely loved it.
One of the best in all of the Star Wars movie universe. And with the ending, there is a whole lot of room for further movies, which, believe me, is definitely desired.
It surpassed the two newer ones by leaps and bounds in my opinion.
Go see it, you won't regret it.

Random non-spoiler thoughts
Alden Ehrenreich is fine as Han Solo, he never comes close to Harrison Ford, but who could? Lots of Chewbacca is always a good thing. Woody Harrelson, Emilia Clarke and Paul Bettany are good in supporting roles. “Rio” voiced by Jon Favreau was a bit of a stand-out character for me.
Donald Glover’s Lando is not what I was expecting, he’s suitably full of shit but comes across as unlikeable too often. The droid “L3” may be the most annoying Star Wars character of all time – yes, even rivalling Jar-Jar.
The first half of the film is fun and quick-paced, but things begin to fall apart in the second half. Presumably Ron Howard was hired to remove all of the comedy, this is not a funny film. Things are played very safe (but I’m sure we all know why). It seems certain "professional" critics who were positive about The Last Jedi (which I hated) are compensating with overly negative reviews for Solo - maybe stop trying to read the room and just review the movie in front of you???
Overall it’s a good but not great film – 7 out of 10. If there is to be a sequel then I'm on-board.

Honestly, I feel like this movie could have only 60% critical approval, and a fraction of fans would still be screaming "Bias! Paid off critics!"

You can commence avoiding the Wikipedia page if you're avoiding spoilers. Plot is now posted.
.....not by me, FYI
As you can see, I don't care about spoiling the movie for myself. Which I hella did the moment I saw the 1-sentence premise replaced with several paragraphs of plot.
Also the cast list got really spoilerific too.

Also the cast list got really spoilerific too. {Spoiler}I hopped on Wikipedia earlier before the plot summary went up, and one of my first reactions was "Holy shit, Darth Maul is in this???"

I just saw this and really dug it. The only issue I have is that it feels like the first part of its own series, when these spinoffs should be more standalone. Unless of course, certain things are expanded upon in the Obi-Wan film.
