So it's not playing on nearly as many screens as this normally might due to Deadpool still making money. I wonder how much Solo will be hurt coming out so close to Deadpool. Just got back from seeing this. I thought it was good but not as good as any of the other Disney films. Yes, better than the prequels. No he doesn't sound like Harrison Ford but it didn't distract me any. Lando was perfect. Wish they could have worked in Lobot somehow.
The cameo at the end was a WTF moment. I'm amusing that will lead to something in another film?

Finally home after a long day, capped off by Solo. Donald Glover definitely stole the show and that cameo was certainly a surprise. Overall, I didn't like it as much as Rogue One but I liked it more than The Last Jedi.

It was..okay. Barely okay, It takes a while to find its legs. I kept thinking to myself I had no idea what was wrong here but something wasn't clicking. More than likely a single-vision.
It's really not funny..like..it tries to be and it's not. I had like one laugh out loud moment (han and chewie meet) and a couple of little chuckles here and there. I don't think it's the script. A lot of the acting seems stifled.
Alden did okay. With what he had. Definitely didn't seem like Han Solo a lot of the times but coming from an actors perspective, I acknowledge that might be where Alden found the character to be at in his life at the time. Or it was an impossible task.
Gambino did okay. I'm the biggest Gambino mark and even I think some people need to calm down about his performance. It was aight. Just like Alden's. I appreciated him doing Billy Dee's speech patterns without it being too distracting.
I want to say I liked this more than Rogue One, because I found Rogue One to be such a bore (mainly due to the characters/cast) but it'd be a total lie. Rogue One is technically completely a better film.
There were moments again..when I wanted to like this film. But it was pretty mediocre. To juxtapose, I rented Game Night from Red Box right after and loved it. And it's easy to enjoy, it's funny, pacings perfect, performances are all fun..all very seamlessly. Whilst in Solo, I spent a weird amount of time putting in energy trying to enjoy it. I may have to check my fandom at the door. Even while admitting I'm a huge Star Wars dork and have a bias...it was okay.

1. You can see the idol from Raiders of the Lost Ark sitting among the artifacts in that yacht.
2. Pretty sure one of the droids was voiced by Anthony Daniels. Had one line.
3. They actually play the Imperial March during that recruitment ad for the Empire. Previously the music had just been part of the soundtrack.
4. What's the deal with the uniforms Han and company were wearing while they were in the Empire? Looked like AT-AT Commander uniforms. Is the idea that the Stormtroopers are still clones so normal people who join wear that instead? |

I'm can't believe I'm going to say it but I thought Solo was incredible. Maybe I thought it was "incredible" because I thought it was going to be an abomination? So maybe it's just "average"? But it was really, really enjoyable. Sure, buddy isn't Harrison Ford and that other guy is Billy Dee Williams but there's nothing I can do about that so I just had to block that out. And they were good. Whatshername from Game of Thrones was as good as her limited skills would let her be. Woody Harrilson was great.
Only stuff I didn't like was Landos droid and its social agenda. The one "equal rights?" line got to me. I'm plastered with that shit enough in real-life. And the cameo at the end was unnessassary. I liked him dead. But it could be a cool angle that he was rejected by his former life and turned to a life of crime. But very few complaints.
I liked that there weren't too many cameos and stuff. And I liked that people died by blaster fire. It didn't feel like two and a half hours. It flew by.
This movie redeemed Star Wars after the Last Jedi. Sure it wasn't original and offered nothing new to the franchise. But I didn't walk out of the theatre hating my life like I did after the Last Jedi. I feel no need to rant but instead sell burnt Star Wars fans on this movie. I'll probably see it in theatres again. And I'll buy it.

Harrison Ford told Alden not to do an impression of him and do his own thing. I respect his choice but he’s supposed to be the Han Solo character. I would’ve preferred that he tried to be more like Solo. There were times he came across like him though. Glover did well as Lando. I still didn’t fully buy either one of them as equal to the performances of Harrison Ford and Billy Dee Williams. They are too synonymous with those iconic roles. I watched the movie as kind of an offshoot remake, if that makes any sense. It was enjoyable from that point of view for me. There were a few attempts at cheap laughs that bombed in the theater that I saw it in. The cameo towards the end confused a lot of the audience. Not every Star Wars fan that watches the movies are familiar with the animated series. Overall it was fun and the acting was decent but nothing really stood out. The best thing I can say about it is that it did feel like a Star Wars movie.
I don’t expect the movie to be a blockbuster. The theater I saw it at wasn’t even half full. I’ve never seen that for an opening day of a Star Wars movie. I think about all the goodwill that Force Awakens built up that was severely damaged by Last Jedi recently and you’re just not going to get as many people supporting the Star Wars franchise in its current state. I don’t see that changing any time soon either.

Like the prequels (except for Rogue One), I don’t have all of this movie as my own personal “head canon,” but I instead view it as a “portrayal” of a quick montage of things that happened at some point. Rogue One is the only prequel I personally consider full blown canon and on par with the originals.
One of biggest reasons is because “that’s not Han Solo; that’s someone *playing* Han Solo.”
The other is because I prefer the “stories” of the Kessel Run and such. Only the real Chewbacca and Han and Lando know how that went down. Most of the original trilogy tie-in stuff felt forced and like it was trying to garner cheap pops for fans that caught it all.
Not an abyssmal wreck like episodes I-III. I’m glad I saw it. I just have to do a lot of sorting out to escape the “forced” nature of a great deal of it. I’m ELATED that it was not a flop that just undermined every good thing about the Solo name and brand. In the end, I was able to enjoy it for what it was and kept in mind that “this is clearly not THE Han Solo.”

I'm glad I saw it. I didn't really enjoy it, but I am glad I saw it.
Granted, I was sick and somewhat exhausted (especially emotionally) when we went to see it - but I felt it was seriously boring.

I really enjoyed it. I didn't have high expectations, the reshoots, changing directors, putting it so close to Last Jedi, not much promotion for a Star Wars movie, and trying to have a new guy be Han, made me wary. But, I was wrong, I liked it, and wasn't bored for a second. We need a Lando and L3 movie, now. Disney, you can't let this be the only time that Donald Glover is Lando. Han piloting the Falcon for the first time, and the music, just f***ing awesome. {Spoiler}That reveal? Holy shit! Was not expecting them to bring back Maul in a live action movie other than Obi-Wan's. Wonder if they're going to redo the Maul death from Rebels, only in live action for the Obi-Wan movie. |

I like it personally because it feels like it validates the (canon) things that take place outside the movies, like the cameos of ships and certain characters from Rebels in Rogue One. Just as long as they don't pull a Blizzard and expect you to know major plot points from their supplementary material in order to understand what's happening in the main event. |

So...Solo.
Maybe that should be the headline. First off, oh that first act... it gives you a very bad feeling about this. Fortunately, the movie does pick up but man... it’s remarkably OK. But just OK. It reminds me very much of Attack of the Clones to be honest. I actually liked Attack of the Clones, for the record, but that’s very much the vibe from this movie. Keep getting a sense of pieces of something bigger and other stories that need telling, but we don’t get it all. If that’s a no go for you, consider yourself forewarned.
So... thumbs in the middle. We have our first Prequel Era movie from the Mouse. Take it for what you will.
