I dug it. Thought it felt a lot more like a Star Wars film than The Last Jedi did.

As long as they don't screw up my Obi-Wan movie I be good with the result of Last Jedi The way I see it, the Saga movies are about leaving the past behind and facing the future of the franchise (ie: what needs to be done), while the Stories focus on celebrating the past. Aside from the flabby second act, Last Jedi was a spectacular success in breathing life into a series that was falling headlong into staleness. Equally, Rogue One and Solo both captured the feel and spirit of the original trilogy.

{Spoiler}{Spoiler}How odd was it seeing the Lando skiff guard disguise in this? So I guess that disguise is something that they have laying around on the Falcon for years when he uses it in ROTJ? I noticed Woody Harrelson's character held on to the helmet/mask even after he took it off and was fighting so it wouldn't cause a continuity error if he just threw it down.

Certainly detracts from the mystique of it in Return of the Jedi, I would say. I didn’t like that. Too much fan service for me.

Aside from the flabby second act, Last Jedi was a spectacular success in breathing life into a series that was falling headlong into staleness. Equally, Rogue One and Solo both captured the feel and spirit of the original trilogy. Eh, I don't know; said it when it came out, but to me the issue with Last Jedi is that it didn't do enough to breathe new life into the proceedings. It teased that it would, hinted that it would, but in the end it was like corporate chickened out from really taking risks that move the "saga" movies away from the basic Rebels/Empire and Light/Dark dynamics (e.g. I really disliked that Poe basically wrecked the rebellion and faced absolutely no consequences for it, and disliked how heavily the throne room teased a new direction for the series but didn't play more with it). JJ going back to the helm for Episode IX has me fearing it'll just be kind of paint by numbers again. I do agree that the side stories are pretty much celebrations of the past of the series and its nostalgia, but Rogue One didn't strike me as feeling like the originals, given that it tried for more of a "special forces movie" feel where the characters are very much secondary to the plot moving along. I can't comment yet on Solo, though.

I think the biggest problem with Last Jedi is that it doesn't leave any particular interesting directions to go in, it doesn't make me want to see what happens next. But really neither did Force Awakens. I'm kind of bewildered at the love for Force Awakens and the hate for Last Jedi when I personally thought TFA was pretty lousy. Oddly enough at least I thought Last Jedi had some decent stuff in it, but it was just way too long and Luke does some things that I felt were not what that character would do (mostly the flashbacks). Let's also be honest. There are characters in these new Star Wars movies that just....suck. Anything with Finn and Rose getting a ton of screen time just isn't going to be salvageable. This isn't a goofy TV spin off series. This isn't a side project. These are actual Star Wars movies and I feel like I'm spending an inordinate amount of time with characters that are peons and nobodies with no real narrative importance.
It is interesting to see this noted, that the new movies are about killing the past and the side projects are about celebrating it. To me that seems like having your cake and eating it too. You can't just kill Han off in one movie and then expect people to rush out to see young Han Solo in a prequel. It's nonsense. I've heard comparisons to Marvel, but the thing there is Marvel has a ton of characters and movies can be made 3-4 times a year. Star Wars should be an event that happens once every few years.

I enjoyed it for what it was. I'm still not entirely sure that we needed a movie about Han Solo, because other than a couple of minor things, I don't think it added anything to him as a character or to his backstory. Alden Ehrenreich did fine. I don't think he entirely pulled off Han Solo, but I think he did about as well as anyone could have in his position, so I have no complaints with him at all. Donald Glover took a few scenes to get into Lando, but when he did he was great.
I am, however, living for the day that we can discuss something Star Wars without it descending into yet another circular discussion about The Last Jedi.

Haven’t seen Solo yet, but I am still shocked by the vitriol that The Last Jedi gets. Yes, that movie was a lot to process as a life long SW fan, but I thought it was a fantastically well done movie

This was pretty fun. I’m still piecing together my overall thoughts, but I was expecting something of a smaller scale Star Wars film and that’s mostly what I got. It wasn’t as emotional as Last Jedi , which I also enjoyed, but I didn’t have too much to complain about. It was a Han Solo film, certainly.
Still miles ahead of the prequels in terms of quality.

Yes, that movie was a lot to process as a life long SW fan, but I thought it was a fantastically well done movie Whether one found the film good or bad, I agree that it's downright baffling how the film gets talked about over half a year later. I thought there were a lot of problems with the film, and I think there's a bigger conversation to be had about how its flaws reflect the changing nature of the movie business as Disney moves toward consolidation of major studio output and places enormous focus on franchises, but there's no reason for vitriol in that topic, at least not the way it appears in so many threads and comment sections around the internet. I try to tell myself that something ridiculous like "video gets tons of thumbs down because the video's creator happened to like Last Jedi" is the result of, I don't know, maybe a bunch of 12-13 year old trying to be edgy, but you just know a lot of that is coming from supposedly grown-ass men, instead. I think I find myself a little more intrigued by Solo the more I hear people describing it as a bit of a "smaller" story; those types of films have more room to develop their own voice and style and not come off as overly ponderous or consequential, and there can be something fun about that. I'll probably wait for a day when the girlfriend and I can hit up a matinee.

JJ going back to the helm for Episode IX has me fearing it'll just be kind of paint by numbers again. I definitely think it could have been done better, I'll agree there. Poe not facing consequences for the hideous death toll on his head is pretty galling, but it can be salvaged if it's the central point of his arc in the third movie. But I thought Luke and Leia were handled perfectly, and I am looking forward to seeing where they go with Ben. Yeah, it's a special forces style movie, but for me it feels "Star Warsian" in a way the prequels and sequels do not. It evokes much the same kind of feelings as A New Hope did the first time I watched it.

Star Wars is not my fandom. I’ve seen all the movies, enjoyed most of them but Attack of the Clones and Last Jedi, but really could careless about EU stuff. I went in with low expectations for this one but got a good fun movie. Did it need to exist? Probably not. But I could watch one or two more of these as he settles into the Han we met in a new hope. More of Chewbecca is never a bad thing.

We are just now getting to the point where we can talk about Star wars without it devolving into a discussion about the prequels (mostly), and I think that is because a lot of people are retroactively claiming those films were better than Disney era films (I disagree).

I feel the biggest problem with the sequel trilogy is that we've never had a chance to see the core characters all-together as a team.
In the original trilogy you had Luke, 3PO, R2, Han, Chewie, Leia, and later to a lesser extent Lando as your core characters. We got to see them working together as team throughout the trilogy.
With the sequels we are two movies in and haven't really seen the core characters all together yet. We've seen Poe and BB-8 together, Rey and BB-8 together, Poe and Finn together, Rey, BB-8 and Finn together, and Finn, BB-8 and Poe together. Never all 4 new core characters at the same time until the very end of The Last Jedi when Rey shows up to save them. That's not counting characters like Chewie, R2, and Rose.

Just finished watching.
In surprised this has got a fair few negative reviews. Cinema was really empty.
It was alot of fun. I enjoyed it.
Only negatives for me are the whole "Han accurately predicting everybody moves so it all falls together" end game.
And Maul. Mail died. Chopped in half and fell down a mile shaft. Him returning rather than make me go wow, made me go urgh.
