I watched it yesterday. It was fine. Who is Enfys Nest supposed to be? The reveal made it seem like we should already know this person, but I haven't found anything online. One site mentioned it was inconsistent with the comic, but I can't find anything on that on wookipedia.

Looks like we've got our first Star Wars flop on our hands. Solo just ate it at the box office compared to early estimates.

They brought him back in the Clone Wars series with an explanation of how he survived. He used the Force to grab onto an air vent during his fall and ended up in a trash compactor. Then he ended up on some junkyard world and ended up with cybernetic prosthetics to replace his legs.

I'm happy that Solo bombed. Not for any psuedo political nonsense you may hear on social media, but that Disney can't just keep churning out movies each year and make a killing every time.
The MCU works (as much as I grief about it) because they seemed to have found a way to give it relatability to modern society without feeling ham-fisted. Star Wars isn't the franchise where you can't just make a movie and it makes a fortune, especially a movie that a year ago was literally a comedy with dance numbers.
I honestly believe that Disney doesn't "get" the property, considering how Episodes VII & VIII feel like warmed over copies of A New Hope & Empire Strikes Back.

"Lando - A Star Wars Story" might have been a better idea.

I enjoyed it for what it was. However it kinda ended open ended. Like what happens after before a new hope. Is their going to be a solo sequel. Lol

Wonder if it's more the tough competition from Deapdool and Infinity War or just general Star Wars fatigue that caused it to underperform.
Really probably a bit of both. It's more the latter for me not seeing it at least, while I was there for Episodes 7 and 8 I had very little interest in this or Rogue One and can't really be bothered with either.

I'm not really shocked that this flopped, but also, I am kinda shocked that this flopped (Yes, I know that sounds stupid). I think there's a little fatigue over Star Wars, certainly with how everyone couldn't handle differing opinions on the last movie and the fan base on both sides made asses out of themselves.
Also, maybe I'm stupid/wrong here, but Harrison Ford is Han Solo. I think a lot of people don't want to watch or don't care to watch someone else play that character. Look at a movie like the Nightmare on Elm Street remake. I think a lot of that movie's failure was due in part to a similar situation where fans of the franchise wanted to see Robert Englund play the character, not someone else. We don't need origin movies for all of these characters/events. I hope this makes Disney pump the brakes on churning out these silly and worthless origin movies.
As far as the movie itself, I'm seeing it this weekend, but the prevalent thing I've heard about it from friends is that "It didn't really need to happen, but it's the 'okay-est' movie ever to 'okay'."

Actually the Nightmare on Elm Street remake didn't flop at all. It was pretty successful and made a profit, it's just the demand for a sequel wasn't there and they wisely didn't follow up with another.

I really enjoyed it, but like... what if they had done exactly the same story but it wasn't a prequel about characters we already knew? That way, like, there might be five seconds of tension about who survives and who doesn't...?

Well, the reality is that Disney paid 4 billion dollars for Star Wars so they gotta keep churning this stuff out. Of course the dilemma becomes what if some of these start tanking and losing money?
On a somewhat related note, I have to ask a question. Do studios not have a publicity department anymore to get various actors to change their names to something actually marketable? Let's face it, Alden Ehrenreich is a painful sounding name that doesn't exactly inspire one to lay down money for a ticket. I recall listening to the radio a few weeks ago and the DJ came on talking about the upcoming Han Solo movie and was like "It will be starring Alden...um, uh, I dunno, I can't say it." Would it be that hard to just change his name to Aaron Alden or something semi marketable? Who would ever pay to see Thomas Mapother? Nobody. But you'd pay to see Tom Cruise.
About the only exception here is Arnold Schwarzenegger. But then in his case he was already a known bodybuilder so there was no way to really change his name, and oddly enough, in his case the name is perfect.

Deadpool 2 had a bigger than expected second-week drop and Solo underperformed in its first week. I'd say it's a good bet that they would both have performed a lot better had they not opened within a week of each other.

So just got back from this. I enjoyed the movie. It's not the greatest Star Wars movie but it is fun. The biggest problem was Alden Ehrenreich. He felt less like Han Solo and more like live-action space Hiccup. I mean, he was fun, I enjoyed the role, but I can't see him turning into Harrison Ford. I watched it yesterday. It was fine. Who is Enfys Nest supposed to be? The reveal made it seem like we should already know this person, but I haven't found anything online. One site mentioned it was inconsistent with the comic, but I can't find anything on that on wookipedia. I think it was less about the audience knowing who she was and more that they expected us to be shocked at how young she was. How old is Erin Kellyman anyways? She looked like she was about 14. Donald Glover was perfect. He was definitely somehow channeling Billy Dee Williams time-traveling ghost in this. And you know what Lando, if L3-37 had lady parts, I'd want to bone her too. She was feisty. I fully believe that that Wookie that Chewbacca saves on Kessel was Malla from the Christmas Special. Lucas can hate it all he wants, but Disney must make every aspect of that Special canon little by little. Darth Maul's appearance was weird. We know his fate from Rebels, and when we first saw him on Rebels he didn't look like he was in peak form. So sometime between the end of Clone Wars and the start of Rebels, he starts up a criminal syndicate with Dryden Vos and Qi'Ra as lieutenants, it falls and he's left a wreck being hunted by Inquisitors, and he's eventually found by Ezra on Malachor. I can't see us getting a direct Solo sequel (or a Maul or Qi'Ra movie), Rebels is over and the new cartoon is supposed to be set during the new continuity. Other then maybe a comic book nobody will read, where will this get followed up on? Will it get following up on? Why bother with this in the first place? And speaking of characters from the cartoons, if you missed it, Aurra Sing, a bounty hunter from Clone Wars, got a shout out as well. I always appreciate things like that.

Well, the reality is that Disney paid 4 billion dollars for Star Wars so they gotta keep churning this stuff out. Of course the dilemma becomes what if some of these start tanking and losing money? Well, if that happens, they might have three options. 1. Mothball the franchise, wait a few years, and see if the traditional cyclinal habits hold true to piquing curiousness. 2. Decide to create their own version of the Expanded Universe and see if any interesting ideas beyond the standard time periods get ahold of anyone, much like The Old Republic, which is the only Legends holdover still getting stuff. 3. Reaccess what they have done and evaluate what changes are needed. I mean, after IX, they vowed to do movies that don't feature references to the usual cast of characters, which is something that I actually respect from Disney (a rare occurrence), so instead of making "origin stories", why not do a movie about the Outer Rim and surviving that because I'm sure there's planets & people that don't give a shit about pacifist governments & kooks thinking they are the actual rulers of this Galaxy. I still believe the current weakness of Star Wars is that everything must cycle back to something because they are worried about continuity errors. To me, it's the supplimental material that will be interesting down the road since it doesn't always have to be about the Force and bureaucracy.

I'm surprised it's flopping because I do think it is a good movie.
Maybe it's suffering because of the polarising TLJ? Or it's been released at the wrong time because at the moment, everything... The ads and stuff, has been all about Infinity War, Deadpool and Jurassic World. Solo seems to have been lost in the pile.

Honestly, the lionization that studios do these days during big moviegoing seasons certainly hurts. Black Panther got to make lots of money because it was released around a time period where studios release turkeys and wash their hands off, and it was an oasis in a desert of crap.

AS long as it doesn't lead to them rewriting what's already been written or hitting reset like they've done multiple times with Spiderman I don't care. Yeah I know different studios did the Spidermen movies but you know what I mean. I want one continuous continuity. Not five Origins stories that tell the same thing with minor differences

Infinity War is the biggest comic book movie of all time, Deadpool has become a cultural phenomenon, and Solo is just a Star Wars side story that doesn't feature any of the actors we care about.
