Between the reaction to TLJ and under-performance of Solo, I can see the next few films playing it safer. The safest way is "redo Return of the Jedi"... Except Kylo already killed Snoke. |

Clones was hot garbage, but the chase of the Clawdite assassin, the first fight against Jango, and the last 20 minutes were some of my favorite movie moments in the franchise, so I know how to pick and choose what to watch.

Attack of the Clones is a good Obi-Wan movie bolted to a f***ing terrible Anakin movie. |

Honestly I love them all (sans some of Episode 1) but that's how I'm ranking them. Say what you want about the Prequels but at least there was a set destination in mind and adequate explanations for stuff going on (even if was poorly done in the movies). With the sequels, without having read the books, I still have zero clue how the First Order is a thing let alone how they (seemingly) have a superior military than they did at the height of the Empire. I still have zero clue who Snoke is and how he is so powerful in the Force. And with how Last Jedi ended I have a feeling it'll never have a satisfying conclusion. While some of the direction is horrible in the Prequels I can at least say that the key actors brought their A game when it came to the parts that needed the emotional resonance. (Speaking of Anakin/Obi-Wan, the destruction of the jedi, the Opera scene with Palpatine and Anakin, Anakin and Obi-Wan's last scene before Anakin's turn to the dark side-- stuff like that.) With Solo and Rogue One though I was grateful that I had wholly new kinds of stories that didn't need to be galaxy spanning epics. They were well told stories that had a concise beginning, middle, and end. I was on the edge of my seat for the train heist and Kessel Run scenes in Solo, and felt a new reason to root for the Rebels after witnessing the heroic sacrifice of the Rogue One crew. Not a popular opinion but it's one I've formed over decades of being a fan and I'm not ashamed of how I feel about it in the slightest.

The big quality gap for me is between TLJ and TPM.

All I know for sure in my rankings is that Empire is at the top with the rest of the original trilogy and the prequels are squarely at the bottom. The Disney fare thus far has been solidly in the middle, which has been a disappointment because they felt like they have the potential to be greater than that but ultimately don't go far enough and settle into a "safe" zone. Never saw the Clone Wars stuff outside of a few of the original shorts.
The Holiday Special doesn't really count for me since I only watch that with a great deal of help from Rifftrax, because good God almighty.

Looks like a second week in a row of the movie doing worse than expected at the box office - had a 77% drop from the previous Friday and wound up only bringing in about $8 million for the day, expected to do less than $30 million for the weekend.

Surprised to see people ranking it high in their personal lists, because I have it dead last in mine. It was a classic "curse of a prequel" in that we already know three of the main characters will survive the film so it has to tell us something deep about their inner journey...which it absolutely doesn't. The performances are decent enough but not nearly enough to elevate the subpar script to anything memorable.
The greatest failing is the look of the film. That was quite possibly the worst looking film I've ever seen, and it's completely down to Ron Howard and Bradford Young. I've read the articles about how Young fancies himself as a low-light expert who draws inspiration from The Godfather, etc...but that era doesn't exist any more. There aren't quality projectionists at every theater that can explore the nuance of a film and screen it accordingly. It would be like if I built the greatest zeppelin the world had ever seen; great job but who can I get to fly it? I remember when Tarantino did his 70mm Roadshow of The Hateful Eight, the biggest stumbling block was actually finding 50 or so people who knew how to physically run it. The fact that Howard and Young went ahead with this method of shooting (of course, the rushed nature of production may have simply meant they didn't have time or care, but whatever) while having to be aware that it would look awful on so many screens is mind-boggling.
