I also love how Ron Howard is the #1 candidate when he couldn't be further apart from Lord and Miller. Only thing similar is he was the executive producer of Arrested Development. Also Ron Howard? That guy should just stick with biopics because every once in a while he'll pull a great biopic out of nowhere. Dude hasn't made a great original film in like over 20 years.

Yeah, The Da Vinci Code and Heart of the Ocean weren't exactly...entertaining. I wish the studios had the balls to just start hiring really established famous directors as opposed to younger ones, so when their "vision" isn't copacetic with whatever universe they're in, the director tells them to f*** off.

Eh, you could do worse than a Star Wars film done Arrested Development style. Han: People at space ports from all around have called me the best starpilot in the galaxy. Narrator: They hadn't. Han: The Jedi don't exist anymore. Jedi: Not true. There are dozens of us... dozens! Lando: I can't believe you've got a Wookie flying my ship. Han: Hey, better Chewie than that laser brained Gungan you were calling a co-pilot. Lando: Hey, there's plenty of competent Gungans out there.

One small thing that's bothered me is that Not ONE article mentions that Ron Howard was on American Graffiti with Lucas and Ford. That's not a commentary on whether Ronnie would be a good replacement or not. I'm just saying that's a nice bit of relevant history that readers might find interesting.

Ron Howard.
Well, okay - I guess hiring a director who hasn't made a cool movie since the 90's is the way to go....?

Clint Howard, Imperial Officer please
American Graffiti isn't the only link. Ron Howard also directed Willow, which was written by George Lucas
Apollo 13 was fantastic. Frost/Nixon was good, though hinged almost completely on the acting. Cinderella Man was a fine boxing movie, though largely forgotten I'd say. Da Vinci Code was what it was and YMMV but it was a fine adaptation of a popular book of middling quality. A Beautiful Mind picked up a bunch of Oscars (I never saw it and can't really comment on it). YMMV with How the Grinch Stole Christmas - I generally dislike it, but a lot of people seem to disagree.
More recently you have The Dilemma, which looked terrible and was reviewed accordingly. I've never even heard the third Da Vinci Code movie "Inferno" talked about in public by a single person, and know no one who has seen it (including myself) but it was reviewed poorly. In the Heart of the Sea was apparently about the events that inspired Moby Dick, which was reviewed poorly.
Hard to get excited, really. I suspect that he is being brought in because he is proficient, experienced, and can probably step in and take over production with too much drama. A middle of the road director who won't waste money.

A middle of the road director who won't waste money. Exactly. The only thing he is consistent in making is biopics. And the one that won him all the Oscars was probably his worst one. But I'm stealing this is comment from reddit that is to good to not share. Also The Dilemma is one of the worst movies I have ever seen. Like think of the worst Vince Vaughn or Kevin James movie you seen. Now imagine that Vince Vaughn movie or Kevin James movie is a thousand times better. You know your movie sucks is when you're praying for Channing Tatum to show up on screen.

Sounds like bullshit. Might be true, but I'd be willing to bet it's PR cover-up. Disneys getting a lot of heat for this and the mass population are realizing how studios are taking advantage of young directors. Alden is an amazing young actor though...so I'm looking forward to his performance.

I know oddball comedy is the Lord/Miller wheel house, but when Disney offer you a Star Wars movie, and a Han Solo origin movie at that, why on Earth would you think that would be the direction to take it in?
And why would Disney offer such a movie to a pair of directors if they appeared to be one-trick ponies?

Disney for hiring them based only on their increasing name value, and then the directors themselves for trying to turn a Star Wars origin movie into a goofball comedy off the heels of possibly the darkest SW film to date.

They're pretty brilliant as far as comedic movies go. The Lego movie and the Jumpstreet flicks are way ahead of the curve. That's why Disney hired them, and apparently that's why they later fired them..situation is so weird.

Eh, I mean Patty Jenkins got fired for having her creative direction thrown out and she seems to be doing not too shabby. Like, maybe the next person who hires them might actually realise who they are and how they work instead of acting surprised by it.

If Ron Howard is going to direct it, those Cocoon aliens should make a cameo appearance.
