It is odd that he doesn't do full research on these movies, isn't it...?

Speaking of Emperor's New Groove... I always just think of what Disney did to jerk around Kingdom of the Sun. And that they changed almost everything about it while still leaving just enough the same so that the creator couldn't make the movie he wanted to. It is odd that he doesn't do full research on these movies, isn't it...? Doug has never been particularly thorough in his research. In his Christmas Commercial list he made reference to Coca-cola desinging Santa Claus which is an urban legend and is EASILY disproved.

And that they changed almost everything about it while still leaving just enough the same so that the creator couldn't make the movie he wanted to. I've heard there were a TON of issues with that movie. IIRC, Sting was supposed to be involved with creating the soundtrack, but due to all the changes they ended up......wait for it...... cutting out all his music from the final film.Sting. He's kind of a big deal. And they did that to HIM. So in retaliation (of sorts) his wife co-directed (and I think he financed?) a documentary about the production - THE SWEATBOX - which detailed how the original story was completely recreated by the execs, how virtually everyone involved in production (animators, voice actors, etc) hated it, and in all pretty much paints a cumulative picture of what Disney Animation was like in those post-Renaissance days before John Lasseter returned and fixed the whole operation. I think in his Roger Rabbit review, he got Clarence Nash's name wrong. For anyone doing Disney reviews (especially with the love he has for it, apparently) that's like getting Walt's name wrong.

(and it got nominated for an Oscar to boot...)

I remember when Bambi 2 was being released. Very controversial on some parts of the internet. The idea of making a sequel to Bambi more then sixty-something years later was looked at as sacrilege.

I remember Bambi II coming out. Me and my roommates at college went and bought it because we were intrigued by it.
I agree with Doug that it was probably one of the best sequels made by Disney. Even if it was a midquel.

I'm surprised he liked Bambi 2 so much. Of course, I only knew it as "a Disney sequel" which just gets lumped in a big uncomfortable category in most minds.
Patrick Stewart seems like a hell of a distracting voice, though (despite the fact that he apparently sounds like the original voice).

It's kind of funny to watch the evolution of some of these, and how there did seem to be a bit of a groove at one point where they kind of hit the right tone in terms of making serviceable sequels with the spirit of the originals...never perfect, but at least something that doesn't feel completely pointless.
Granted, I think where it has seemed to work best is in the smaller stories, since those aren't trying to top any of the big production aspects of the originals, and thus can be their own thing. The 101 Dalmatians sequel, Tarzan 2, Bambi 2, a couple of the Lelo and Stich ones, they aren't trying to punch above their levels, so to speak, and thus the final products end up with some actual merit to them. It also helps that movies like 101 Dalmatians and Bambi were very different from the usual fare in the first place, so you don't go in with absurd expectations.
The "take three TV pilot/unused episodes and throw them together" formula shows itself pretty badly, but it seems like they got it settled down a bit as time went on and at least put the work in, even if corporate was probably wrongheaded to be asking for these films in the first place.
Still, the "there was a misunderstanding" pull is my most hated of tropes, going back to my earliest movie viewing days as a toddler. Hate, hate, hate, HATE it.

There are three kinds of movies in this world -
1. Movies that when you leave the theater you say "well that was a good movie". 2. Movies that when you leave the theater you say "well that was a bad movie". 3. Movies that when you leave the theater you say "well that was a movie".
Brother Bear falls firmly in that third category. It was never a commercial success, it was never a critical success, it wasn't revolutionary, it wasn't infamous, and it never built up any kind of cult following. I have no idea why any Disney exec would look at it and think "yes, that's a cash cow waiting to happen, crank up the sequel machine".

I wish he would stop calling "Tarzan and Jane" a television pilot. It came out after the show had already ceased production and was used as a way to burn off a couple of unaired episodes. If anything it was a television finale similar to "King of Thieves". He doesn't really seem to have done any research on these things. See also how he's repeatedly said he doesn't know what the deal was with the Lilo & Stich 2 recasting whenever all you have to do is look at the Wikipedia page to get the why of that one.

I believe he's made statements before to the effect that he doesn't like to do much research into these things because he wants to be a casual viewer to them like most anyone else and goes at them from the angle of someone who knows nothing or little about them, letting them stand on their own. In a way, I can understand that mentality, but in every other way, not so much.

Ah yes... Cinderella III. No idea what Doug is going to think about that one. He's either gonna love it or hate it.
