yoda was a puppet in episode one? Yes, in fact a lot of the effects in episode one were practical.

Unquestionably an improvement.

That Yoda just didn't look like the same guy. Maybe if he was supposed to be hundreds of years younger it would have looked okay.

except they completely knackered up the timing of the wording, far too hurried in the second half, really made a mess of it

Aside from the most egregious changes (Han/Greedo in ANH, the CGI dance scene, "Noooo" and Hayden in ROTJ) and a few of the more shoddily done ones (the piss poor job touching up the colour on Luke's lightsaber blade) I genuinely prefer the Special Editions to the originals. A good number of them are frivolous, granted, but they added a welcome layer of polish IMO. Also, for reference: starwars.wikia.com/wiki/List_of_changes_in_Star_Wars_re-releases

It's the tiny things for me. Luke's yell when he falls in ESB. ALL the effect f*** ups in A New Hope.
Counter point: I don't mind most edits he's done, Even Hayden in Jedi wraps up the two trilogy's nicely. But changing the original Boba Fetts voice??? Unforgivable.

From a story point of view it makes sense
Also on Boba I wonder how true the rumors were that George thought about adding him crawling out of the pit when he was doing the edits

There really is a third category for Lucas edits, which are edits that are just plain weird. You're left utterly befuddled as to why Lucas did it.

I can't watch a legit released ROTJ since 95 vhs releases because they've been awful, the ONLY change I liked was the Victory celebration.
ANH & Empire I'm OK with (Greedo shooting aside)

A New Hope cgi stands out too much, takes me out of the movie.

He was a puppet like he was in the OT.

I love that Lucas insisted on keeping the Stormtrooper smacking his head into the door. From a blooper standpoint that should have been edited out but Lucas loves it so much, he left it in. That always makes me giggle has since I was a kid.

If they just had Ian McDairmid record the exact same dialogue, I would have no problem with that edit, but the new dialogue is stupid. Especially Vader's "How is that possible?"

I have no problem with cleaning up the print and the sound and maybe replacing a ropey special effect or expanding a scene with more shots, like the approach to Cloud City.
But other than that, no.
