Adam Driver: Star Wars 8 should open without a trailer

With just four days left until the first Star Wars spin-off Rogue One hits theaters, the next big Star Wars movie, Star Wars 8, is just a mere 368 days away from arriving in theaters. Production wrapped back in July, but we haven't had any indication yet about when the first trailer for Star Wars 8 will arrive. If one of the film's stars has his way, there wouldn't be any trailers released at all for this highly-anticipated sequel, but, thankfully, it's not up to him.


While we'll have to wait another year to see Adam Driver return as the villainous Kylo Ren, fans will be able to see him on the big screen in Martin Scorsese's Silence, which opens in limited release on December 23 before expanding nationwide next month. CinemaBlend caught up with the actor while he was promoting that movie, and they asked him whether or not he would enjoy it if Star Wars 8 opened next year without Disney or LucasFilm releasing a single trailer for the film. Take a look at his response below.

"I think that'd be bold. I'd love it, yeah! Then no one would know anything. The less people know, I feel like, the more exciting... the more of an event it is."

You may recall that, back in late November 2014, Disney and LucasFilm debuted the first 88-second teaser trailer for Star Wars: The Force Awakens, more than a year before it was set to hit theaters. A few weeks ago, an unconfirmed report surfaced that claimed the first Star Wars 8 trailer will arrive in the first quarter of 2017, meaning sometime between January and March. While that doesn't exactly narrow down the debut's timeframe too much, some have speculated that it could debut during this year's Super Bowl, while others believe it could be attached to Disney's highly-anticipated Beauty and the Beast, which hits theaters on March 17.

It's Star Wars, I'm not entirely sure it would lose a single opening weekend ticket sale if it lacked a trailer.

Nerds and millennials were enraged when Disney kept details for Episode 7 on the mum as much as they did, I can only imagine the mass riots at the gates of Disney World as fat Ewoks with Darth Maul lightsabers were murdering WDW castmembers.

I'd see it whether they put out a trailer or not. That's because I'm a Star Wars fan. You know they will put trailers out there because Star Wars is big business and they want everyone seeing those special effects and getting hyped to go see the movie. It would hurt their business more than help it if they'd held back on releasing them. Disney wants as much product awareness as they can generate and they want your money. I have no doubt that first trailer will air during the Super Bowl.

all the main characters RIGHT AFTER the end of EP7!
NOT the last shots of them in EP7
them inbetween EP7 and EP8!

I avoided the trailer and somehow pulled that off, except for someone who posted a fake spoiler on Facebook that got me really upset so I decided to see an absurdly late screening to make sure nothing else was spoiled for me.

I don't know, I think there is still a way to have trailers without spoiling too much. It's just that a lot of big blockbuster movies rely too much on trying to get attention as opposed to making people want to see more. I actually thought The Force Awakens did well with their trailers as they didn't reveal anywhere close to the amount of stuff that other movie trailers do.

Basically. Creatively this works for most films. I was just thinking about this last night strangely enough. Less is more. But in today's day and age...

The thing is, Star Wars will bring people to the theater. To not mention anything about the film other than the few details that we know from Episode 7 would make things a bit more exciting. So, I completely see where he's coming from.



But, as has been said, trailers don't need to reveal everything like they have recently. That's an issue with how trailers are made, and not the concept of trailers themselves.

I just straight up don't watch trailers for anything because Western audiences prefer trailers that spoil everything, even if so many people say that they don't. It's definitely an issue, I think, but with as expensive as the movies can be people like having a rough idea of what they're getting so they feel like they're likely making a good investment. It actually makes sense when you approach it that way, as that's the underlying psychology, but I prefer to go into any movie I'm watching completely blind. I don't look at reviews, watch any trailers, none of it.
