Being a security officer at a hospital I encounter life and death almost on a daily basis. I've seen people pass away soon as get to work since I work in the ER as well. You never actually want to witness death, but it can happen. The worse are children. I have to be around for the families depending on how they react. I've seen some extreme situations. One instance would be to graphic to get into. We also have to do morgue escorts where we escort the person picking up the bodies. Sometimes I may help if the body is heavy an the person needs a hand with lifting. I don't get too bother by helping lift the deceased. I think that is near my threshold. I also have to assist with psychiatric patients as well. As stated above, it can become hands on fairly quickly. And none of that compares to dealing with people who come to visit the ones in the hospital. Mate I totally get that, I've seen a lot of stuff that nightmares are made of. Before they put my permanent post in the psychiatric unit, I had to patrol the ER and the hospital and dealing with visitors was worse than the psychiatric patients sometimes. I've never had to do morgue escorts though, although where the hospital i work at is located (Newark,Nj) going to the morgue, is in a really bad part of town. That has to suck about morgue escorts though. We have a morgue that holds 6 bodies on the ground floor. And so sometimes the bodied are in the room where they pass away for a few while they wait to be picked up by the funeral home. And we have a Hospice across the street too that we deal with so the same deal there. We are there to escort the person from the funeral home to the bodies and back to their vehicle. We've had over 15 escort over the past couple days which was a lot. The reality of mortality and mental health on a large scale can get to you. Not to mention seeing how the healthcare system works about how it's abused. I'm routinely a few minutes late to work, but I also work a ton of overtime due to the pay not being great. So you know how it feels when you are running a little late. That shit is so trivial when experience the stuff you do once you start working. We aren't armed, so when there are hospital knockdowns when we get gunshot victims we have to be the first line of defense in case someone wants to finish the job. Or when you have to assist with a patient who is HIV positive that gets combative that is threatening to bite you or is bleeding. And my favorite, you never know who has scabies. I know I've ranted on these forums before. When I get started I gotta vent.

I work in a poorly managed pub in Queens. When I'm not getting shit from my boss who doesn't know what he's doing, I'm dealing with cokeheads, hipsters with no concept of bar etiquette and regulars who think the place is their living room. That being said, I wouldn't trade it for anything else.

From the last day of August in 2015 until a few weeks ago I worked in a restaurant as a f***ing dishwasher, even though I have 2 degrees because the economy where I live is f***in horrible, and hated every second of it. I started venting in the thread below. officialfan.proboards.com/thread/543062/dear-workEasily the worst job and boss I ever had.

I work as a guard in a psychiatric emergency wing. So people do same I'm nuts, especially since I usually end up wrestling with someone each day As a former patient of such places I salute you. That job is not for the faint of heart at all. As someone that spent a few months years back in a mental hospital I also salute you for working a job like that. I saw what all you have to do on a job like that and it takes a special kind of person to do the job and do it right. I am still close friends with two of the security people from my stint years ago. Both sure nice guys that did all they could to help out while I was there.

I make sure that I'm always courteous to people who work in food service and retail and most any other position that requires dealing with the public on a regular basis.
I know that can't always be fun, so I do whatever I can to make it more bearable for them.
I have a lot of respect for people who deal with the public. I used to work retail when I was younger and it wasn't for me, so now I make sure I'm never one of the assholes that I used to hate.

Kind of specific, but I used to teach. When I ran into someone who happened to as well in an unrelated environment, the first question asked would of course be what grade level. Without fail, every one of them considered me insane for far and away preferring to work with the three to five year olds over any other age group. I guess turnabout is fair play, because I felt like those who preferred high school or, goodness forbid, junior high, were equally insane yeah, usually black Friday and at Christmas. retail, such a fun job at times. This year was my first ever working retail on Black Friday (sporting goods store, in case anyone was curious). I was terrified going in, but got super lucky. Every person I dealt with was perfectly pleasant and patient. The closest thing to a bad encounter was a slightly older man who made some strange, racist jokes to me and my coworker manning the front front table, I think it was his off-kilter way of attempting to flirt with her. We've dealt with far worse on plenty other occasions.

When I worked at Gamestop, I had the exact opposite problem. People were always like "You sold video games? That sounds like so much fun!" while anyone who's worked for Gamestop knows that "fun" is about the last word you'd describe working there.
But I'll say this, working in retail has given me a ton of patience for cash register jockeys and servers at restaurants unless they're just douchebags without provocation. Much more than people I'm out with usually. Especially since a lot of the times, the long waits at restaurants for food are completely out of the servers' hands due to something happening in the kitchen.
People did think I was crazy for wanting to substitute teach the older kids compared to the first and second graders, but I deal with the older kids easier, especially the boys since I just talk sports or video games with them when they finish their work and it focuses their attention on the conversation instead of causing trouble.
