Typically you get so invested in a show that you can manage through bad seasons but sometimes you get a point where that isn't enough and you can't watch the newer seasons.
For some shows it eventually got that way for me. For example everyone will say the simpsons no doubt. Everybody has their cut off point and you may rewatch your favorites but you can't watch the new stuff.
American Dad and Family guy comes to mind for me as well. Earlier seasons are good but it got to the point especially in Family Guy where Seth McFarlane is pushing his own agenda out and saying damn the show. South Park sort of fits into that list for me as well.
Are there shows you haven't gone back to, to watch the new material after you stopped watching it.

Oh man, 24 was this for me. I was a fan until they started killing off good characters and I stopped watching after they killed Curtis for no reason.

I have been telling myself for years to go back to 24, but the thing about that is that I really have to follow the season from the beginning. I liked the show and I am more than willing to get back to it.
I found myself getting back to American Dad at some point. I can't see myself getting back to Family Guy, though. At least not now.

I can laugh at a bunch of old South Park episodes pre-Bigger Longer Uncut. There's only a small handful after that I really enjoyed (Free Willzyx, Casa Bonita). But now usually I find it kind of overbearing.
The first three seasons of Boardwalk Empire I felt were amazing. The Gyp Rosetti saga was the last time I felt the show had real electricity. Then it started dragging in season four, and by five they ran out of ideas and killed off all the cool people.

nah generally if I give up on a show it may as well be dead to me.
I may catch an odd episode or a repeat of one I liked but there is far too much television and other media readily available to me to go back to something that annoyed me enough to stop watching.

Sometimes, but it is very rarely. I do sometimes come back for a finale, just to kinda get closure, like coming back to Friends, Frasier, and Seinfeld after having fallen out of love with the shows to a degree.

I got this way with Arrow and Agents of Shield but I'm currently rewatching/catching up.

If I feel that something isn't as good as it once was, then I'm able to stop watching quite easily. To my mind, if I wasn't enjoying the show then I won't be missing out on anything.
I've always felt that I'm quite good at noticing when the quality of a show has dipped slightly - at least to my mind. I noticed it with The Simpsons, Frasier, The Fresh Prince. In the end I gave up on them, as it was often painful to see just how far the show had fallen. However, I saw the final episode of Frasier a few weeks after it was broadcast and, dodgy 'English' accents aside with Daphne's brothers, it was nice to say goodbye to the characters I'd watched all those years ago. This was probably an exception rather than the rule, however.

The Simpsons. I didn't bother giving the later seasons a chance, as I considered the period around 2001/2002 or so the time when the quality got really bad.
But the later seasons have some great stuff. I especially love how they've developed Maggie's character so much more, to the point where she does more fun stuff onscreen than most speaking characters.

I tried with Arrow. Gave up early season 3, came back for season 4 and it was relentlessly terrible. I won't go back again.

I give up on shows fairly often. There's so much to watch, something has to be really good for me to stick with it.
- I tried to go back to Arrow after season 3, but I just can't. It's a sad reality this this once great show is very bad now. - I gave up Flash in the middle of season 2. It's just so silly and corny, I find myself checking my phone more than the show when it's on. I am planning to go back and give it one more try. - I'm very close to giving up on Designated Survivor. Its schedule is so goofy and the last couple of episodes have been pretty bad. - I gave up on Agents of SHIELD, tried to go back to it, and was quickly reminded why I stopped watching to begin with. - I also gave up on Walking Dead, watched this season, and will definitely never watch again. This is an awful show.

I also gave up on Walking Dead, watched this season, and will definitely never watch again. This is an awful show. It might even be worse than Cop Rock. How it's so popular, I never understand

I stopped watching Lost in the third season, but picked it back up in the fourth.
Survivor was another show I stopped watching, but then I just randomly picked it up again maybe seven or eight years ago and I watch it religiously again.

Walking Dead. Didnt like it first season, came back and enjoyed.
Breaking Bad. Made it a ways in, knew it was good, but was a little bored. Came back with a fury to finish off.
Galavant. Started in Season 2 (Blame Hulu), thought it was really dumb. Now I listen to the soundtrack and base it off when to take breaks.
Supernatural, got annoyed with it when it went really Judeo Christian. Got back into it. Stopped again.

The one time I can recall was with the Office. I hated the first two episodes but caught a random season five episode and laughed a ton so I went back and watched the show. Went on to really enjoy it.

Oh man, 24 was this for me. I was a fan until they started killing off good characters and I stopped watching after they killed Curtis for no reason. I think the episode where they killed Curtis was the last one I watched. Certainly the last one I cared about.
