We all know the story that the true sequel to smb was a game which was more like a smb 1.5 with the difficulty cranked right up, and the game the west got was the reskinned doki doki panic. A game that felt very different from its prequel.
However, I think it slips in between Mario 1 and 3 a hell of a lot better than the original Mario 2. I think Nintendo made the right call with ditching the Japanese 2, cause I think people would be pissed getting the same game more or less. Do wonder what the Japanese themselves made if it.

It's my favorite NES Mario game. I hated those Phantos, though.

Considering Bob-Ombs, Shy Guys, Pokey, Birdo and even the Ninji (in World) have appeared outside of 2 now, plus Miyamoto actually having more involvement in Doki Doki Panic than he did the Japanese SMB2, then yes I count it.

It's definitely a full-fledged part of the series by now.

It was the second game, there was no such establishment of what a "Proper" Mario game was. Same thing with Zelda II: A.o.L.
If anything, the current Mario games go more off course then Mario 2 did.

Well, Doki Doki Panic was originally actually gonna be SMB2 before they decided it was weird, so I'll count it.
I also count the lost levels as one, even if it routinely makes me flip the table.

Good enough by me, and considering all the stuff other Mario games borrow from it, yeah I do. Not to mention, had the Japanese sequel came out while the videogame industry was rebounding (HEAVILY on the back of SMB 1), it might have done a LOT of harm.
And this is coming from someone that owns both versions; SMB 2 on NES and SMB 2 on FDS (though I don't own a Famicom let alone a Disk System).

Forget Super Mario Bros. 2, what I want to know is if Super Mario Bros. Special for the NEC PC-8801 is considered a proper Mario game?

Well, Doki Doki Panic was originally actually gonna be SMB2 before they decided it was weird, so I'll count it. Pretty much. OG SMB2 was criticised for essentially being the same as the first so ideas were tossed about for ways to make a new game more distinct, with one prototype involving verical-scrolling levels and a lift-carry-throw system. This was initially shelved before being revived when the Yume Kōjō license came along.

Absolutely.
When it first came out when I was a kid, there wasn't even any 'controversy'. Most everyone just thought it was a great game.

Dreams can be dangerously real for Nintendo characters though. Just ask Link. ...and since Wart cameoed in that, we can say Wart is the closest thing to Freddy Kruger that Nintendo has (even if he wasn't a villain in Link's Awakening).

Yeah, Doki Doki Panic was created by the Mario team, so it's not like they just slapped Mario sprites into some random game.

It's my favorite NES Mario game. It's my favorite Mario game, period. It's also one of my favorite games of all time, regardless of what system it appeared on. (Same goes for Zelda II: The Adventure of Link.)

That and the difficulty is the Zelda equivalent to Japan's SMB2.
