So this may sound stupid, but have there been any changes to the way board games are played?

So this may sound stupid, but have there been any changes to the way board games are played? Yes. New mechanics are being developed all the time, and we are seeing a huge spread of European style games into the market which emphasize very different styles of play to your traditional American classics.

Yeah. This. And it's a good thing too, as far as I'm concerned. Hard to describe Euro style unless you play it. American is often referred to as Ameritrash because it's more self-indulgent or theme-based or experience-based than cognitive. (More to it than that but that's generally the idea.) Euro games can be 3, 4, 5 hours and are more about content and objective than flashy. They have themes, but with American style it's more or less getting invested in the aesthetic and experience (maybe even socially thus) and Euro is kinda watching (keeping an eye out) and thinking and planning. Above is poor description by me. Because it's really something that speaks for itself when you play something like Puerto Rico vs. something like The Game of Life or Sorry. But Euro isn't just all strategy so the initial comparison I made isn't altogether accurate. Even when you have a storybased concept Euro style it's just way different because of the lack of self-indulgence and base attention grabs that American games are guilty of. (And to American gaming style fans, the flashy and gimmicky is the perk that draws them, so it's nothing bad at all. Just different.) In short, yeah, board games are kinda experiencing a revival and some games are tapping into amazing ideas the go beyond what Clue and Monopoly started with. So yeah, I would say they are different than what they used to be. For instance, Betrayal at the House on the Hill has been mentioned a lot in the thread and it is not anything like what board games used to be. Closest thing to call it is Clue meets roleplaying meets video game meets hide and seek. But it really can't be compared to anything like what games used to be like. Except there is a board. And you can move around (to a point) and you try to win. But even "wins" are conditional in this case whereas it used to be everyone trying to accomplish the same thing. Monopoly - American style - popular still but way popular back in the day by comparison Ticket to Ride - more Euro style - kinda the "new popular" among family gamers

Arkham/Eldritch Horror are two awesome games once you get the rules. Zombies!!! is a fun time-waster with lots of expansions. Dungeonquest is super-fun, but be prepared to die, a lot.

Magic: The Gathering and Cards Against Humanity count as board games? I thought they just count as card games (or a collectable card game for MTG). Last board played was Settlers of Catan on New Years Eve. I kind of consider any tabletop game when talking about board games (as long as a computer isn't involved.) Awesome list. Have you played Roll For the Galaxy? I only played it one time, but I preferred it to Race. I'm usually not a chance type of fan in board games, but Roll isn't all chance or anything. Just makes you think on your feet more. I just didn't get into the meta-game aspect that seems to be there in Race (that is, knowing what every card in the game is before playing seems to be conducive to being too good at the game). If I played it more, I might change my tune about that. I just remember there being one play dynamic in Roll that made it seem more fun than Race. And seeing your rant list, I would put Magic: the Gathering on mine. I have no issue with anyone who enjoys it. None at all, because those who enjoy it do so in a way that I once did. I just enjoyed the game more when I didn't know every little scrap and tittle about metagaming and effective strategy during each set when first starting. The competitive scene at a high level is quite a turnoff, and that's what has made me more sour against it than any other game. I had a breakthrough finish at an event where I was an unknown, and I got some attention for it. At that point, you're "in," and all of a sudden there is an expectation level placed on you, and the different factions in the competitive community start including you to a point where it's just not fun any more. Playtesting among the elites became a job-like effect (not that it became a job, but the distancing from the enjoyment of it to the "I know everything that's going to happen or who is going to need what to happen at every corner of the game" is what I mean). The game just becomes robotic once you learn all the nuances of each set in competitions. I wish I could just play, but it's a bit of PTSD each time I get invited to sit around with actual friends and play. I have no desire, and it's because I've been corrupted on how to view the game and how to view "just-for-fun" enthusiasts. It's like I've gone to the dark side and I don't know how to recover. Tried Roll for the Galaxy wasn't really much of a fan myself, think the rules were a bit too abstract for our game group. I play Magic the Gathering purely at a casual level, which is why I like Cube so much. I bring 540 cards in a box, we draft from that box and have some fun. if a card is considered too powerful or unfun I can remove it and replace it with something else for the next time. Some people try to build cubes on the most powerful cards in magic but I prefer to make mine a step through time of cards that our fun in magic. Anyone played X-Wing? That's very popular around my area. A lot of fun too if someone has enough ships.

Other games I have played recently that might interest some people.
Cosmic Encounter - lots of fun plenty of potential to backstab. Doom - Yes the video game is now a board game surprisingly good fun. Memoir'44 - Really good and strategic world war game (6-player was a blast) Scythe - Got a lot of hype last year, is actually a very solid game. Forbidden Desert - Decent relaxed co-op escape the desert game, you will probably die a lot.

Back when I was a kid my dad worked at Goodwill and as a result I had a bunch of board games. One I liked was called the Christmas Game. Basically it was a Monopoly knock-off but a lot more fun to play. Sadly I had a flood after my dad left the Goodwill and as a result most of the rare stuff I had was ruined. A while back I looked for one of those Christmas Games online and found out they now go for over $100 used which really made me wish I still had it. Not because I would sell it but because there is no way I will likely ever get to play it again.
Another thing I have looked for a long time is a set of Tarrot Cards. No not the ones for fortune telling which you can find here and there, but ones you use the play the card game Tarrot.

I always wanted to play boardgames as a kid but none of my family or friends were very much interested.
I got my wife a copy of Forbidden Island for Christmas and she enjoys playing that with me so going to be a couple more 2 player games we can play. Don't know anyone else interested in playing so we're stuck with 2 player games for now.
I've heard Mr Jack is good for 2 players and the board game shop near me has a few copies in so that will probably be the next purchase.

I have a ton of 4 player and under games I don't get to play often and some Ive never played at all due to having too many people to play with. I still really want to finish Pandemic Legacy and I've never gotten to play X-Wing despite having like 20 ships.

Does anyone go to big board game events? GenCon? Origins? A statewide gaming convention?

I have my own personal use board game based on A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors. Players use dream powers to fight against Freddy while battling thru town to find his bones in one of 32 locations and return them to the Junkyard for proper burial.
I love roleplaying games, but don't really know where to start in finding new ones. Target and Walmart are hardly spots and Toys R Us left me uninspired recently. For instance, none of the Euro games listed in this thread can be found at any of these three stores.

If anyone ever wants to play Game of Thrones online (it takes six players), hit me up on PM and I can set up a game. (It's legal.) It's so difficult to find six players who know how to play.
