A samoan/pacific Islander makes perfect sense for the role. The fact he's the only one in the movie with tht heritage is what makes no sense. And Mamoa has lots of credits to his name other than Game of Thrones. Dudes pretty bad ass. He really carries the gritty aquaman well. "Gritty Aquaman". Anyone else just throw up in their mouth a little? Geoff Johns' run on the book started with armies of Lovecraftian fishmen who ate people and it was critically acclaimed. as for Arthur living in New England that actually makes a lot of sense considering how the Lovecraft stuff gets played up in modern incarnations.

My biggest beef is that he isn't blonde. I'm okay with changing things for movies, but his being blonde was part of the character. The other Atlanteans were distrustful of him due to his blonde hair because they view it as evil/a curse. Atlanteans aren't blonde except Aquaman was because his father was a blonde human. they put some blond in there though I hadn't seen that. The last promo pic of him as Aquaman I saw he still had dark hair. Looks much better now.

And Mamoa has lots of credits to his name other than Game of Thrones. Dudes pretty bad ass. He really carries the gritty aquaman well. Well Aquaman is from Maine. Atlantis is also supposed to be in the Atlantic ocean not the Pacific you know hence the name... so Polynesian really doesn't make a lot of sense either directly or from sharing a common ancestor since it is believed they likely came from Asia and uh... Asia is not connected to the Atlantic ocean directly. All That said as Atlantis doesn't exist there is no "right way" for Atlanteans to look and you could literally make them Blue fish people and it would be just as "realistic" as anything else. And honestly when it comes to the DC movie universe it's way near the bottom of any problem I might have with it. I honestly had no problem with Momoa being cast until you mentioned those points. Now thinking about it, the whole casting of him does feel like the Snyders saying "Eh, he wouldn't be a blond white guy, he'd be...eh, Polynesian, I guess. We probably won't be able to get Rock, he costs too much money, let's get that guy from Game Of Thrones, he hasn't done much lately." Just more of them putting no thought into how a character comes off. Now granted, I am happy that it's not yet another white guy playing the role, but from a real life perspective, with the points you mentioned, it doesn't make a lot of sense. Also Momoa...not a great actor. Nice guy, but I don't see him bringing much to the role as Arthur other than growling and staring through people. But again...this series has a lot more problems than the casting of one guy.

Momoa refused because he didn't like the money they were offering him. Then WB swooped in and announced him playing the part of Aquaman. I wouldn't be surprised if WB thought this was a major coup and that Marvel had made a huge mistake letting a legitimate actor with a following go in place of an old wrestler. So in closing, in another timeline we might've gotten Aqua-Batista.

IMO if they were going to sign anyone from Game of Thrones to play Aquaman, it should've been the guy that plays Jaime Lannister. I mean yeah, the shooting schedule would have been a juggle, but he was my first pick choice since they launched the Nu52 titles.

Jason mamoa was a name before game of thrones and that includes both genre and non genre stuff. He was the third selling point on the marquee.

I'm still trying to figure out the logic of making an Aquaman movie one of the very first projects in the universe. Nothing against Aquaman on his own, but in the eyes of the public he's still a massive joke and unless Justice League is devoted pretty much entirely to making him look like a badass then that isn't going to change any time soon.

They have been made him a badass for 30 years in everything. People just hold on to the superfriends.

I like Aquaman, but even I admit he's a hard sell. I don't have a problem with WB making him more mainstream friendly. I just don't have any faith the movie will be any good based on their recent track records.

I don't have a problem with him as aquaman. I'm more against Zack Synder directing again.
WB Exec: "Hey Zack, you directed two films that failed to live up to expectations, have a third."

We have to come to terms with the fact that most of our popular heroes were created by white men at a time when only white men were the big heroes.
Times have changed. Our stories and our myths have to bend to reflect that, not vice versa.

Why was Roman Reigns in Batman vs Superman? There was need of some mild smugness in the midst of intense brooding.
