On the latest "Old vs. New" episode, The Nostalgia Critic takes a look at & compares the 1981 film "The Evil Dead" & the 2013 remake.

The original is a good movie (I prefer 2) and I thought the remake was pretty good

Mia was a total babe, that's all I can add about the remake.

Pretty much agree with everything he said. The remake adds some interesting layers to the story with the drug addiction and mental illness, and comparing it strictly to the original, where Ash hasn't yet become the wisecracking, chainsaw handed, and shotgun toting Ash we all came to know and love, Mia is definitely the stronger of the two. But there is something raw about the original, where in spite of the extremely low budget effects, it feels grittier and more real. There's a certain innocence to the characters that makes the events that much more unexpected and tragic. And you're already disadvantaged with a remake because the element of surprise is gone. So I'd definitely give the nod to the original, while still appreciating the remake as a strong horror film worthy of any aficionado's collection.
