Which game in a series seems to be the odd one out? Either because it doesn't seem to fit, it's hated, or everyone just forgets it exists for whatever reason.
Final Fantasy: I'd probably say III. It was the only one where the original wasn't released outside Japan, I believe. And then they remade it with completely new characters. I remember when I was young wondering where III was, since they released compilations or the PS1 of I and II, and IV and V.

Batman: Arkham Origins is a fairly standard example. Not only was it completely unnecessary for the overall story and came out when people wanted a sequel to Arkham City, but the gameplay was almost entirely unchanged, they reused elements of bosses in City and Asylum for Origins, it looked ugly due to the snow, the bridges were annoying, and it was choppy as hell in a lot of places.
Oh, and shoehorned multiplayer. f*** off.

I remember when I was young wondering where III was, since they released compilations or the PS1 of I and II, and IV and V. I'd consider FFII more the odd one out than III considering how much of a radical departure II was with its battle system and character growth system. We also never got the Famicom original of that one outside of Japan. First time it appeared outside of Japan was on FF Origins for PS1 in a remade form. I do like that FFIV took a lot of story concepts and places from FFII (Mysidia, a dragoon named Highwind, etc.) and put them in a much better game. I do wonder why it took them so long to bring III out or remake it. It was very much the stepping stone between I and V in terms of gameplay. It was even the first game in the series with a true job system that let you switch jobs for your characters. Maybe because it was so similar to I in that you played as four nondescript dudes who become the Warriors of Light to save the crystals.

Mass Effect 1 was way more RPGish compared to the latter ones.
Quake 1 had a lovecraftian horror/fantasy theme while the rest of the games was about cyborg monsters(the strogg).

Oh, and shoehorned multiplayer. f*** off. See, that's my favorite of the bunch. I thought it felt more like a Batman game than the other games. Origins had a functioning Batcave, and made Alfred and Jim Gordon essential figures in the story. The Rocksteady games treated all of those elements as afterthoughts. I also thought the boss battles in Origins were far more creative.

Bioshock 2 and Bioshock Infinite. The former because people don't seem to talk about it as much as the first game or Infinite, the latter because Columbia isn't Rapture (although the Burial at Sea DLC tries to connect all the games).

Deus Ex 2 takes place in a different era and is pretty much completely ignored by later games in the franchise. Also it's greatly dumbed down from the first game when it comes to mechanics.

It says something that they're putting out a sexy Bomberman game about teenage girls blowing each other's clothes off and that fits into the series way more than Act Zero does.

Double Dragon 3. (arcade trilogy-wise, Super DD for SNES also didn't belong IMO) Pac and Pal. Donkey Kong 3.

The most recent Thief game (fourth in the series). The whole war between the Hammerites and the Pagans, and the theme of the Keepers maintaining balance between the two factions, has been scrapped, and the protagonist is a descendant of the original Garrett from the first three games.
