Sony says Spidey is out of MCU after Homecoming sequel

The former chief of Sony Pictures, and producer on Spider-Man: Homecoming, Amy Pascal, spoke about Spider-Man no longer being a part of the MCU at Cinemacon.

"One of the things that I think is so amazing about this experience is that you don't have studios deciding to work together to make a film very often.

In fact, it may never happen again--after we do the sequel.

Because Sony and Disney and Marvel all decided that the right thing to do was to allow Peter Parker and Spider-Man to be in the MCU, and to work with the Marvel guys and have them produce this film, and I think that was a very rare thing for three companies to do and a very brilliant thing for them to decide to do because there are only so many stories that you know you can tell again and again and again about Spidey, and this is something that we would never been able to do in any other way. So, it was a very selfless thing that was very smart on the part of all the companies."

News of Spider-Man returning back to the Sony fold follows the news of Sony developing their own Marvel Universe not associated with Marvel Studios and the MCU. A Venom movie and a Black Cat and Silver Sable movie is in the works, actually thought not to involve Spider-Man. Now it appears as if Sony just has to bide their time, because following the Spider-Man: Homecoming sequel, according to Amy Pascal above, she thinks Spider-Man will be back fully with Sony and not attached to Marvel Studios and the MCU.

Definite bad news.

I'm really hoping this is a negotiating tactic used by Sony to raise Spiderman's selling price. Because Disney is really going to need Spiderman to carry the MCU brand after Infinity Wars especially if Chris Evan's doesn't resign or RDJ gets tired of playing Iron Man. You need Spiderman, The Guaradians, and Doctor Strange carrying the brand forward.

That's actually the perfect time to play hardball if you're looking to sell it at the highest possible price. If they actually mean what they are saying then all it's going to do is severly harm a working relationship with the biggest movie studio and destroy The Spiderman franchise. The only reason why they have Iron Man co starring in the new Spiderman is to ensure the casual movie crowd that's probably already fatigued of Spiderman that it's a new Spiderman that's actually a part of the Avengers Universe breathing new life to the franchise. If they undo that with another universe then f*** that might contribute to the eventual Super Hero Movie Bubble Bursting.

Yea I meant that as a statement of okay they are going to play hardball than why would they play hardball. I don't blame them at all as they are going to squeeze every last dollar out of this because this is more than they would of gotten with Spider-Man on his own.

They are looking like they are taking a hardball stance early and it may be unnecessary but business is business and they want every dollar they can get.

After Ghostbusters flopped, Sony shut down and let go a good number of their employees. If that flops as well (looks like it will with how bad it looks as well as being a ripoff of the Lego movie) the company could face bankruptcy.

Would they really be more concerned with cutting off what's left of their noses to spite Marvel if that happens.

They know it's going to eventually end up at Marvel anyway in one fashion or another, might as well throw it out there as a negotiation tactic so then Disney pays the cash to get the whole thing for Infinity War.

How does that even benefit Sony? Marvel isn't making money on this film outside of merchandising. Their deal with Sony is strictly for creative control. Given Marvel's track record, why would Sony not want their continued involvement?
