Despite Sony's posturing, within five years I see Disney owning Spider-Man outright.
And Ghostbusters as well.

Sony trying to play hardball with Disney is like TNA trying to play hardball with WWE which make sense since Amy Pascal is Sony's Dixie Carter.

If Homecoming winds up being as fun as it looks, this is gonna look so bad in hindsight.
The MCU is overstuffed, yes. But RDJ is getting older, and if Evans walks, some top superhero is gonna have to anchor that brand.

They are really going to try and play hardball knowing that Spidey is poised to become a big part of the universe moving forward Yeh,i'm thinking if they are playing hardball,it is just a business move. Otherwise it is just stupid if they think they can do it without Marvel help.

Reading the quote, I dont think there's any need to be hitting the panic button quite yet. She only said that it MAY not happen again, not that it outright won't happen again.
Like othere have said, I think this might just be Sony playing a little hardball with Marvel.

How does the rights-to-Spidey-characters work anyway? Sony's had them for, what, close to 20 years now? As long as they make X number of movies starring any character they retain the rights?
Someone enlighten me, please.

Just wondering something about all this:
Would Sony's claims still work if Disney and Marvel decided somehow to switch out the Peter Parker Spider-Man with the Miles Morales one?

Yes, Sony have the rights to Spider-man and all of the characters associated with him. Even if for some reason Marvel had the rights to Miles they wouldn't be able to call him Spider-man. (and they don't especially since Sony is making the animated Miles movie)

Like, they could make a Jessica Drew Spider-Woman movie, because she actually doesn't have a hell of a lot to do with Spider-Man and to the best of my knowledge did not debut in his books, but they could not do Gwen Stacy Spider-Woman. (Spider-Gwen)

(Spider-Gwen) Yeah, I believe Jessica Drew is not considered part of the deal with Sony... though they may not be able to call her Spider-woman since Sony might at least try and sue Marvel saying it's part of the deal... when Jessica really has no real ties to him outside the similar name.

(Spider-Gwen) I'm still kind of wondering who the hell would own Gwenpool. She's not actually Gwen Stacy or related to X-Men so presumably Marvel would own her, but she's still kind of directly linked to both, particularly given she at least started as part of a series of Gwen dressing up as random other heroes for covers so you could argue she directly originated from both.

I'm assuming Marvel but for multiple reasons they wouldn't make a movie of it... part of it being so Fox and Sony don't try and sue them

Exactly which is why you're suppose to play hardball and the timing of this right after the buzz of the second trailer being released. But with this being Sony I wouldn't be surprised if they hadn't thought of selling the rights or are aware they created a hardball situation.

I think the MCU existing catalog is deep enough to bring in newer/under-exposed characters like they did with GotG.
Kamala Khan would be a perfect addition with the world of superheroes being more known in that universe.
She Hulk would be a great add-on to a Hulk movie that they could then loop into bigger stories.
Not to mention Moon Knight, Howard The Duck, and a ton of others could be brought up and feel fresher than Spiderman while still filling any voids left by Capt or IronMan. Heck Parker isn't a leader/figurehead like those two guys are anyway.
That way they just bump up Winter Soldier to Capt, War Machine to Iron Man, and stuff like that.

Ruffalo's portrayal of him in Avengers gave off that wise, level-headed OG vibe that would be great for a leader. Like, he's been around, he's seen some shit. In a lot of ways that Banner is the elder statesman of the MCU.
