The attack on the Death Star in A New Hope. That was an awesome scene.
The lack of great space battles in the prequel trilogy was very disappointing, although I thought the Phantom Menace one could have been good if they got rid of Anakin's tom foolery.

He a kid so I give him a pass Now for Clones had no reason to have one To be fair to Clones they did give us that pretty fantastic ground battle on Geonosis instead so I can forgive them. Would have been nice to see a good space battle though instead of the 1 and a half hours of crap we had to watch to get to the Geonosis battle though.

ROTJ will always be a the top of the list. Although the Rogue One Scarif stuff flew near the top. I though the opening of ROTS was very cool, but it seemed FAR too busy and too much in the background to really appreciate. Also its a shame Dennis won't come back Just pretend he changed his name and turned into Max Von Sydow in Episode 7. Because I'm fairly sure that was - at some point in the script - supposed to be Wedge......

Good topic.
For me, I mark my ever lovin' bootie off for Calrissian behind the controls in Return of the Jedi. The action was huge and played out so well. In addition, the juxtaposition with other events dependent upon each other is standing ovation worthy. The Jedi battle really gave midcarders a huge part, which is also part of the appeal. Not just a Leia, Luke, and Han show.

Be glad that Lucas deleted that parents scene I actually am not. The relationship between Padme and Anakin did not feel natural at all. They really needed to add a scene or two in where the two of them actually demonstrate a reason to come together. Some of the deleted scenes would have helped that even if it would have thrown off the pacing a bit. An alternative solution would have been shorter such scenes and the implication that Anakin's security detail lasted longer than a few days. Show them getting to know one another, imply that they were together 24/7 for about a month or two, and it would have felt more realistic. Yeah, The Battle of Coruscant and the Battle of Scariff were both pretty good (if you happen to ride Star Tours and your ride randomly takes you to the Battle of Coruscant it is even better than the movie). As far as Wedge goes, I really think it is better if he is a retired fighter jockey. I think it would have taken something from the character to have him die in any way that is not like the death of (spoiler for those who are not caught up on Star Wars Rebels) {Spoiler}Commander Sato Wedge, if he is to be killed off, should be killed in some blaze of glory to sacrifice himself. I honestly thought the books were going to do that with him at the end of the Behind Enemy Lines Duology (a.k.a., the best part of the Yuuzhan Vong storyline) and I would have been fine with it. Anything else would not feel appropriate for that character.

I have more of an emotional connection to A New Hope, because it was always footage from that movie that they'd use in Muppet Babies. And back then, any glimpse of Star Wars was so exciting.
But emotional connection aside, ROTJ just amps it up to 11. And has been pointed out in this thread, the battle was one of three moving pieces that all depended on each other.
However Rogue One's space battle, maybe because it's the latest and I've seen it the least, is becoming my favorite.
So long story short, I can't decide.

I'm going with the Death Star battle in "Star Wars" (Episode 4: A New Hope, although for me the movie will always be just "Star Wars").
And I think the main reason is because there's something about the computer animation that never quite fools my brain... but in "Star Wars" it was done with models so you have an actual sense of motion in the scenes.
This came up with a different movie I saw, the Japanese attempt to mix folklore and "Star Wars" called "Message From Space" (1978). There's a battle at the end and there's a shot where you see a ship on fire, crashing towards the camera... and the way the fire on the ship is burning and jumping, I haven't seen a computer model be able to mimic that (yet). Someone on the set of that movie took the model they've been using for the ship and lit it on fire and rigged it to dive towards the camera.
TL;DR - "Star Wars" because I prefer model work to computer animation.

Lucas forgot after ROTJ that battles are about stakes. He thought that they simply exist to dazzle the audience with CGI.
Who the sides are, what they are fighting over, and what they must do to win, was tossed aside.

STILL the most exciting sequence in a new hope for me, it just ramps up everything ..... action, music, editing, threat, it's pace is tremendous! Exactly. The whole ending sequence had such a satisfying climax. New Hope scores on every level. You watch the Force Awakens and there's an even bigger threat the rebels are facing yet the whole lead up to its destruction is one the most anticlimactic moments in the series.

Battle of Endor and Battle of Scarif. The Old Republic-style Hammerhead ramming into the Imperial Star Destroyer was a really neat scene. And the Battle of Yavin was great, too.
One of the neatest visual scenes from the Battle of Endor, though? All the TIE Fighters and Interceptors just SWARMING around the Rebel fleet. There were so many of them and between that and the blockade of Star Destroyers preventing escape, it showed that the Empire considered this battle just as important as the Rebels. All the chips were put on the table. For the Rebels, victory meant a crippling blow against the Empire, destroying much of their fleet and removing their most important leaders from the board, including the Emperor himself. For the Empire, victory meant crushing the Rebel Alliance as an organized military force and ridding the galaxy of their influence. And unlike last time, they wouldn't let their arrogance undermine them. They didn't take the Battle of Yavin very seriously and it cost them dearly.
Battle of Atollon from Rebels is really good, too.
