Beacuse the might have been an actual saint. If you were of my generation or a little after, you probably grew up with this man teaching tolerance and kindness. And apparently from dozens of stories about the man, he and his tv character were one and the same.
His show is currently streaming on Twitch, with proceeds going to PBS. It has currently raised over 20 k.
Mr. Rogers has been gone 14 years, and even IN DEATH is raising tens of thousands for public television.
Wherever ya are Neighbor, you are amazing and missed.

My favorite story is about him is that one time a thief stole his car. Then the car was returned with a note saying "sorry, we didn't know it was yours."
The Snopes page on the story has it as "undetermined", with the earliest version omitting the bit about the note. I'd like it to be true though.

The world could really use more people like Fred Rogers right about now.

If they ever made a movie about his life you can bet your bottom dollar this would be one of the most pivotal scenes:

So I'll be back when the day is new and I'll have new ideas for you and you'll have things you want to talk about. I will too.

I've joked for years that the world already went through a rapture, and Rogers was the only one taken. More and more, I kinda hold to that. Dude was everything a human being should be.

There wasn't a lot of flair to his show, and I mean that as a positive.
So many shows think you need to be goofy to appeal to young children, however Mr. Rogers never did that. He talked to his audience in a calm manner and was able to hold their attention. I always felt that was the best approach with younger kids.

I grew up in the Midwest in the 80's around a lot of closet racism, and watching Fred Rogers is legitimately the reason I never cared about the color of other kids. I specifically remember him teaching that everyone was the same, and I always made friends with everyone because of that, because my mom surely didn't give me those values.

So proud to be from the Pittsburgh area because of him. One of the few people who could reduce me to a crying blubbering fan if I ever had the opportunity to meet him. Closest I got was Mr. McFeely and Purple Panda.

There's a line from Mrs Doubtfire where Robin Williams' character said something along the lines of "You don't need to talk down to them, you just need to *talk* to them" Rogers understood that more than anyone.

He understood that children's programming didn't need to be sensory overload

That dude really enjoyed changing his footwear I'm sure the shoe industry has a lot of its wealth to attribute to that man. There have to be adults out there who just own 1,000 pairs of shoes because of how they grew up seeing someone always changing his.

He was such a good person. He always wanted to be my neighbor. I would've loved to have him as my neighbor now.
