Well, they're no strangers to that either, among the upcoming projects from Square-Enix are Battalion 1944, Project Octopath Traveler, and Project Prelude Rune, and just last year they had I Am Setsuna, whatever Moon Hunters is, and whatever The Turing Test is. They typically don't make as big a deal over new stuff but Square certainly does more than just Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts. And really outside of some common elements like spell names, weapon names, summons, role archetypes (Paladin, Dragoon, Black Mage, White Mage etc), and mascot critters like chocobos and moogles, every mainline Final Fantasy is practically its own original IP anyway with vastly different characters, stories, settings, and gameplay systems.

Pretty sure this is the way the higher-ups at SE got to Nomura and told him "either you get off your high horse and start actually making games on schedule, or you can go to form an indy studio that will never have the money you want to put pouches and belts on everything". Is Nomura infamous for lateness? As far as I'm aware, he's only been a director on KH games and FFVII spin-offs and I never heard about any of them having schedule issues before. He was also directing FF versus XIII before it became XV. But the comment wouldn't just be about Nomura (he gets a pass more often than not, but that's because he tends to not give release dates until he feels the game is 80% ready, as to not have to delay the release date over and over... so they take a LOOOOONG time to develop by comparison).

Nomura did an OK job with getting the first two KH's out in a timely manner. But I think with later games, especially FF Versus XIII and KH3 and the bajillion KH spinoffs and remakes, he gets so caught up in his own ambitions and ideas that the projects sorta get lost within themselves.
I think he also did better with older games because they were a lot more limited tech-wise. PS3 and PS4 are considerably more advanced than the PS2, GBA, PSP, and DS. Maybe it's his artist's mentality.

Nomura worked on XV for a long time, apparently.
