Watchmojo recently did a video in this. Sorry can't remember every song they featured. One big one they missed (not even an honourable mention) was 'Cats In The Cradle' a lot of people including myself thought or still think that it's a Cat Stevens song. It's not it's by Harry Chapin. Now to be fair the Cat in the title is what extends to the confusion, along that it does sound like a song Stevens would do.. in fact Stevens has a similar themed song called 'Father and Son' .
One for me personally is 'Rush' by Big Audio Dynamite .. I thought it was by The Clash. Probably the Mick Jones connection. I also mistakenly thought the song was called 'Change of Atmosphere' for years too.

When I was a kid I thought Dream Weaver was sung by Rod Stewart for whatever reason. I was told it was sung by Gary Wright, but I had no idea who he was.

How in the hell do people still think "Don't Worry, Be Happy" is a Bob Marley song? First of all Marley and McFerrin sound nothing alike. And most importantly Bob Marley was dead for 7 years when that song came out.

Not me, but my sister initially thought that "I Will Survive" was done by Donna Summer, rather than Gloria Gaynor. Same thing when she thought that "Rock Wit 'Cha" was from Tevin Campbell, instead of Bobby Brown. I don't think that she knew that Tevin Campbell would have to have been 11 or 12 when that song was done, as that song was released on Bobby Brown's album, "Don't Be Cruel," which was released in 1988.
My dad thought that "Stuck in the Middle with You" was from The Beatles for some reason. Same with how he thought that "Cars" was from, well, The Cars, not Gary Numan. The singing sounded nothing like Ric Ocasek, nor did the instrumental sounded nothing like The Cars' style.

For a long time I thought this was an attempt by Johnny Cash to remain contemporary in the late 70s/early 80s.

This should cover the major ones: Definitely thought A Horse With No Name was Neil Young for the longest time. Never heard of the band America at the time so I had no reason to think it wasn't. That list isn't bad but there are a few songs that I can't see being confused for other artists. Maybe it's because I'm just too familiar with those songs.

I thought that song that goes "work work work work work work work work" was by Rihanna, until my girlfriend corrected me that she does have a song that goes "work work work work work work work work" but it isn't that one.

I thought the song "Bad Girlfriend" was a Nickleback song forever, right up until I happened the see Theory of a Dead Man live. When they went into the song, me and my friend looked at each other and simultaneously said "I thought this was Nickleback!"
I hate both of those bands.

I once mistook Filter's "Hey Man, Nice Shot" for a Soundgarden track.

I use to mistake Muse for Radiohead a lot.
I remember for the longest time thinking Muscle Museum was a Radiohead song.

I once mistook Filter's "Hey Man, Nice Shot" for a Soundgarden track. I thought it was Nine Inch Nails tbh. But Patrick did work with Reznor prior to Filter.
