I read the synopsis and I just wonder what? A play about Alexander Hamilton? There's people from 30 years ago people don't remember or care about-how did this become a hit?

Same way Avenue Q became a hit. It's a well written traditional musical presented in a new format.

Eh..I'd say Avenue Q lived by its catchy tunes, great sense of crass humor, slightl social themes, and its puppet gimmick.
Hamilton I think was a lot of the rap approach to the songs and also the unorthodox casting of very famous, white American historical figures. It's an interesting story, as well..
I loved it when I first heard the soundtrack years ago, being in a lot of theater circles, good God is it over saturated and overrated these days.

Every few years, Broadway becomes briefly relevant again for a few months before fading back into New York niche.
Avenue Q, Book of Mormon, Hamilton... the cycle continues.

A well written and unique play by an immensely talented guy with a proven track record thanks to In The Heights, along with an amazing cast where even the bit parts are tremendous singers (Look up some of Ariana DeBose's singing, and her main duty outside of the ensemble is carrying the bullet that kills Hamilton).
And heck, in fairness, how did many musicals become hits based on their premises? - Cheesy 50s b-movie take on Frankenstein but with transvestites and rock and roll. - A dark look at the evolution of Nazi Germany... With fun musical numbers performed by an amateur! - A version of Oliver Twist that cuts out all the actual reasons why things happen. - Romeo And Juliet but with more Puerto Ricans and 50s slang. - Villain AU fanfiction of The Wizard Of Oz. - An adaptation of a 1900+ page French novel where pretty much all the characters die.

I listened to the soundtrack on a car ride to and from Connecticut a few months ago, and while the first act is really good, the second act is pretty boring. But as good as it is (or at least half of it is), at the end of the day, it's basically "Schoolhouse Rock" in rap format.
