For the past 25 years or so, every now and again I'll pick up Mike Tyson's punch out on the nes. I love this game, it's just the right amount of difficulty, not that I'm especially good at it. I rarely get past Bald Bull.
So I'm playing it last night, and like every time I play, at some point I wonder "what are those stars for?"
So after years of playing, I finally googled it. And whadya know, you can uppercut using the start button! And it appears to be a super punch of sorts!
I feel silly for having been oblivious to this part of the game for literally decades.
So please share the times when you were completed oblivious to key parts of a game.

25 years and just now knew this? Read the manual man! Have to come back to this one as I cannot think of anything at the moment.

You have no idea how many people don't know you can run faster in the original Super Mario Bros. by holding B.

I'm sure there have been dozens of times where I stupid brute forced something in a game before realizing that there was a way to do something that was both easier and intended by the designers. Can't think of any examples immediately though.

I feel like this best explains my playing of Super Mario Odyssey. I'll do some wacky wall jump with a couple hat bounces to get a Power Moon just to look around the see the "proper" way that I skipped.
But that's half the reason I play Mario games. I always like to think "THEY DIDN'T WANT ME TO DO THAT MUUUU HA HA HA HA HA"
Little closer to topic: I didn't know about continues in Super Mario Brothers until about two years ago

25 years and just now knew this? In my defence, the 'start' button on the nes should only be used for pausing, or accessing a menu. It's a rule or something. Though now I say that, I should probably check what that button does in my other games...

You have no idea how many people don't know you can run faster in the original Super Mario Bros. by holding B. or that running skips holes the size of one block

Cue my story of realising you can actually run in resident evil 4 after playing the game for about 3 days.

You have no idea how many people don't know you can run faster in the original Super Mario Bros. by holding B. or that running skips holes the size of one block Or that after a game over, you can continue on the world you left off on by holding A as you push start.

I didn't know how to solve Riddler's riddles in Arkham Asylum for the first 75% of the game. I felt like such an idiot when I figured it out.

I must have missed something obvious in the tutorial stages of Final Fantasy X: I was playing it and having a really hard time towards the end of the game. I remember kinda just mashing my controller in frustration and suddenly Tidus left the battle and Waka took his place. I was confused as hell. I didn't realize you could swap party members mid fight.
The game became super easy after that very moment.

Two in Phantasy Star IV on Genesis/Mega Drive: I did not know that the Wood Carving and the Pennant, both from the town of Termi, do have a use other than just being gift shop junk. (The other things the shop sells are for guild jobs). You can put both of them in your house by using the item when in there. Chaz marvels at them, while Rika makes fun of him for wasting money.
The "TALK" option exists in your menu to remind you of what to do next in the story, to give you clues if you're a little stuck, and just for flavor. However, if you go to the option when Chaz is the sole party member, something that happens 2-3 times in the story, the "TALK" option is instead changed to a variation on "Mumble", since Chaz is just talking to himself if that is selected. Cute touch.
