I’m trying to write something original here, so this isn’t another “me too!” post. This remains the only Marvel movie I did not see in the theaters and it is a real regret I did not. I legitimately was busy at the time it came out and I honestly forgot. I saw it in DVD with friends maybe a week or so before Avengers came out and still enjoy it very much. Great introduction to the character BEFORE we get to him being a superhero. I still dare you if you don’t know in advance to tell me which version of Steve is the special effect and which is the real guy, it still holds up. It is thematically similar to Iron Man while being a great period movie. Loved Red Skull and I still wish we could bring him back. Sets up a lot of characters that I liked that I still wish we could bring back.
And then there’s Hayley Atwell...
Sorry, needed a moment there.
Seriously, I know people love Black Widow, among other Marvel female characters, but they have yet to have a female character as strong, as compelling as Peggy Carter. And a lot of that has to do with Hayley as much as the writing. As mentioned, the last scene between her and Steve is a great cry moment. It got given away in the trailer, but her testing Steve’s shield is still a favorite of mine too.
When I rank the Marvels, First Avenger is sixth with Civil War at fifth, Winter Soldier at two. Cap dominates the Marvel hierarchy of movies, no question, and that’s thanks to this movie.
And there you have it.

It's great. Really establishes who Cap is and shows that earnest/heroic characters can work. Everyone involved plays their roles well. You can also really tell director did Rocketeer as well.
And Cap as a USO performer explaining the suit and such was a brilliant little twist; particularly the punch Hitler in the face bit. Then when they put him in front of actual soldiers and they had no time for the act, it just worked even better.
