Aka “Scorsese making a cheesy melodrama knowing that even two hours of Jack Nicholson farting into a kettledrum would have gotten him the Oscar that year”. Or something similar.

It’s not the best film Scorsese’s ever made and I’ll admit there is a whiff of “ok, we really need to give him the Oscar now” vibe about the awards it received. But I do think it’s still a really good film and I genuinely believe Scorsese didn’t make it just to get Awards recognition. (Nicholson incidentally is probably my least favourite part of this film).

Haven't seen it, but the originals are incredible. Especially loved Eric Tsang's performance as the crimelord, since I was only familiar with his work as comic relief in martial arts action movies (Lucky Stars, Shanghai Express).

It's awesome. Is it anyone involved's best movie? Nope.
Who cares, it's a great time.

I thought it was ok when I watched it but it's one of those movies I have absolutely no desire to watch again.

The rat at the end. Such subtlety. Scorsese was taking this movie VERY seriously.

It was alright, but there's a butt load of Scorsese movies (Taxi Driver, Goodfellas, Raging Bull, Wolf of Wall Street, The Aviator) over it.

Enjoyed it when I saw it in the theater, I enjoy watching it on DVD now. As said above, it may not be the best for anyone involved, but that's setting the bar pretty high given the talent involved.
I think it's great.

i was actually shocked at how it all ended really won't say for those who haven't only seen it once The ending actually really sucks compared to the original incarnation that is Infernal Affairs, which is a movie that is about a thousand times better because it had an ending that fit what the movie was all about. I guess when Marty was making The Departed, he decided the American audience wouldn't be happy with that. It's a fine movie, but once I saw Infernal Affairs, it made itself pretty obsolete.

I absolutely loved The Departed. But it really was one of those sympathy Academy Awards for Scorsese as he directed much better films than this. Taxi Driver, Last Temptation of Christ, Goodfellas, Casino, The Aviator, and Gangs of New York were all AMAZING films and deserved Academy Awards way before The Departed.

two hours of Jack Nicholson farting into a kettledrum Why wasn’t this the film made? Took Scorcese a long time to get Gangs Of New York made, and they’re both still alive. The dream lives.

The Academy decided "Crash" was the best movie to come out one year. I don't really know what they want, really, maybe Departed catered to them in a way his other stuff didn't.

I love it actually. An amazing cast and IMO one of Leos best performances. The man acts his ass off in the movie.
