HAD Roman been booked like a shit kicking "alpha male" even sensative folk music types like me would have loved it. Because we're wrestling fans. But they didn't. They had him cut stupid promos about Roman and the Beenstalk and other crap.

Except Cena's rise was 100% natural, and pushed by the fans. They let him be the rapper, and he got red hot. Cena got to the top spot because the fans demanded it. From the moment he got the rapper gimmick till about November 2005 (Batista's rise), Cena may have been the hottest guy in the company. Roman was red hot in the Rumble against Batista. People wanted him to win. People loved The Shield. The problem is people hated once he went solo megapush. And the same thing happened with Cena. During his US title reign with the spinny belt, people frikkin hated him and his inevitable odds overcoming march towards the title. So yeah, the comparison is apt.

Truth is Vince doesn't know what he wants, he's just a stereotypical cranky old Boomer who irrationally and hypocritically gets mad at younger generations for doing the same things that he used to do, so to him all that matters is that whatever he's pushing be the opposite of what millennials (both in his company and his audience) want. Instead of actually trying to listen, come to some sort of a compromise, and attempt to grow his audience, he's going to throw a tantrum and book for himself until his last day.

They DID give him stupid lines to say, but on the other hand, they sidestepped something I was fully expecting them to do: Immediately put him over Rollins and Ambrose, to prove he's the real star. No way they would have done everything right.

Yeah, The silent badass face does not work as the long term face of the company which is the slot they're forcing Roman into. It could work better in a NWA/WCW style promotion where the main attraction is a top level heel, but the WWE is and has always pretty much always been booked around a top level face.
