It was the most revolting thing I ever drank. I mean, the smell was like gasoline, & it had a very acidic taste. I immediately started retching. That sounds like hyperbole from a Weiner, but like coffee, its something I can't understand why its popular. I'm going back to being a teetotaler. Beer is the worst tasting alcohol imo (with the possible exception of tequila). If you're curious and not committed to being a tee-totaller, I'd try a few different spirits/mixers to see what you've got a taste for. Or cider. Cider is great.

When I started drinking, I felt the same. I was that dude in the corner sipping a Mikes Hard. I still am, and that's along with Redd's Apple Ale. And Lemmys (Jack and Coke) but that's a different story. I will say this: having tried (and failed) to be a beer drinker, craft beer is REALLY not my thing. Only one I can stand is the one that Megadeth has, and I have trouble getting through one bottle (and it's EXPENSIVE!).

I don't get the appeal of alcohol in general...I often think that alcohol should be outlawed.

I don't get the appeal of alcohol in general...I often think that alcohol should be outlawed. People like the taste and and the feeling it can provide, whether as a social lubricant or just something to take the edge off. As for outlawing things you don't like...well, just remember how that last thread on that went.

What brand did you drink? I can only stomach a few brands of beer. Off the top of my head Stella, Viking, and Gull. The latter two I have only found in Iceland so far. Go figure. Microbrewery in Indianapolis called Sun King. They only make ales, which I know from reading to have more of a bite then lagers, which are brewed & stored cold. I used to feel the same way and to this day there are beers that are just terrible to me still. Having said that, there are those beers that are much more to my palette. I’m not saying you should try more beer if you are not interested, but if you are I would say you shouldn’t go for anything labeled as “full flavored”. I don’t drink often, so when I do I try to branch out to learn what I like and what I don’t like. I like pale ales and several lagers. I like Fosters and Newcastle. I can’t stand any porters. Corona is athlete’s foot- flavored piss as far as I’m concerned. Having said that, I still get it and have no issues with anyone choosing not to drink. Besides, I prefer to drink Kombucha. There are a number of local Indiana companies that make a wide variety. Hell, Bloomingfoods even has a selection on tap.

Yeah, I'm not an alcohol drinker myself, but I get why people are into it,and I have to admit sometimes I do wonder what I'm missing. Now, smoking on the other hand,I never really got the appeal and I think that should be outlawed.

I hear you on coffee. Damn near everyone loves their coffee, but to me it's just the nastiest, most bitter shit on the planet. And that's even with sweeteners. It’s awful

I came from a family of alcoholics. I couldn’t stand the smell of beer. Seeing what it could do to people killed any desire for me to even try it. I remember going to a meeting to support a family member and the speaker asked if there was anyone there that’s never drank. I was the only person that raised their hand. The speaker kind of laughed and said I was an alcoholic too. I said that wasn’t possible because I don’t drink and I have no interest in it after seeing what it’s done to my family. He said it was in my genes and that I was. I was so offended by this that I actually drank a beer for the first time just to prove him wrong. It sounds silly but that was how much it bothered me. I wasn’t even of legal age yet. It wasn’t hard to get a hold of in my house back then. I hated the taste of it. It smelled like one of those really nasty restrooms where dudes pissed all over the floor. I knew instantly I could never be addicted to the stuff. I’ve tried a few harder drinks later in life at social events but I didn’t really care for them. It just never took with me. I will never be an alcoholic. I’ve never dated one and I refuse to. I remember one girl wanting me to take her to a bar to spend the night drinking. I blew her off and that was the end of that. I’ve lived my entire childhood around it. Seen terrible things because of it. Lost most of my family to it. I won’t live my adult life around it too. Didn’t mean to vent but I’ve had far too many experiences as to why drinking will never be a fun thing to me.
I’ve also been around people that drink coffee for as long as I can remember. I can’t stand the smell or the taste of that either. I even tried the overpriced fancy stuff with a girlfriend that recommended it and that didn’t take either. I’ll stick to water. Keeps me happy and healthy. To each their own.

I genuinely love good beer, but to parrot what others have said it's hard to dive right into beer with something with a huge and bitter flavor profile like an IPA. That's something to build toward; I know when I began drinking beer I largely started with stuff that was much easier to drink (e.g. a Belgian style wheat beer, or an Irish red, etc.), then found my palette was more receptive for stuff with stronger tastes.
These days I tend to be more into "roasty" beers like stouts and porters, but there's a whole world of really interesting styles and flavors out there, and like anything else it takes time to develop a taste for it. Some just aren't my style (e.g. I'm not big on straight up bitters or strong fruit flavors), but I love finding good beer bars when I visit a new city.

I don't get the appeal of alcohol in general...I often think that alcohol should be outlawed. Simple. Being drunk is effing hilarious. I actually kinda agree. It can be a slippery slope with the booze. No reason it's a-okay while things like weed are demonized. That said, it would be unlawful to remove it from the playing field and things like speakeasys would be up and running within the hour it was announced. It's here forever. Cheers.

When I first tried beer when I was 21 it was awful and I remember it being Budweiser lol.
I mainly drink Miller Lite, you should start out with a miller lite, bud light or something.

The latter two I also found really nice when I went to Reykjavik, had a pint of Gull with my curry soup bread bowl at Svarta Kaffi.
