How about the 7th season TNG episode where everyone devolves into primitive lifeforms? You haven't lived until you see Spider-Man Barclay. I think it was called "Genesis." I think the outright bad season 1, the rocky season 2, and the boring and crappy season 7 are why I just can't grasp the whole "OMG TNG was the best show ever!" thing. TNG's basic premise was that civilized discourse and mediation can cure the universe of its problems, but for TV it leads to a lot of talky and dull episodes since the entire point is to avoid violent confrontations.
What's funny is having the whole DS9 vs. TNG debate with someone that it 100% pure TNG, then confront them with the notion that DS9 was top to bottom a considerably better show.

When George's fiancee died and everyone in the gang basically shrugged it off could have been a moment where people turned on the show. The characters were always self-absorbed and neurotic, but the episode made them out to be full-blown sociopaths, and traditionally on a television show you want someone in the cast you can root for and find likeable. Seinfeld pretty much bucked this trend. It was a turning point in the show though, the last season was terrible

For people who weren't alive then, it's probably hard to imagine how big the Simpsons was in the early '90s until you realize that it's pretty much been coasting on that level of good will for about 22 years. In my opinion the show is riding off three beyond incredible seasons (3-5, maybe with parts of 2).

Seinfeld pretty much bucked this trend. It had some genuinely good episodes, but in between them was a lot of trash. And it was only the show’s own strong name that prevented people from recognizing it.

Dexter had like 3 great seasons, and then you put up with a bunch of bad or mediocre seasons because you wanted to see it play out. And then you regretted sticking around at the end too. Dexter Season 4 was where it should've ended. I thought that it was perfect from beginning to end. Season five was where the downward spiral began.

Lost’s first two amazing seasons pretty much guaranteed people would keep watching no matter what to see how they wrap it up, no matter how ridiculous it got.

I personally prefer DS9, but when TNG was on that show was f***ing fantastic. Besides, it's not like DS9 didn't start off pretty rocky too. Much like TNG I feel they really didn't hit their stride until Season 3.

Let's see. Season 1 of DS9 was certainly better than Season 1 of TNG, though it does have a few clunkers and attempts to bring in familiar characters a bit too much. Season 1 did finish really awesome though with the double whammy of Duet and In the Hands of the Prophets. Season 2 had a great 3 part beginning and some good stuff in between and then the last 8 episodes or so just star rocking and never let up.
TNG was a solid enough show for most of the Seasons 3-6 period. Even at its best though the show is still so static and frankly kind of boring. It's kind of weird though how people remember the knockout storylines that TNG did (the Borg kidnap Picard, Klingon Civil War, etc.) and forget the crap, while with DS9 some people harp on the occasional clunker episodes (some of the Ferengi stuff, Worf/Dax vacation on Riza, the muse sucking the life out of Jake) while the other 95% of the show was terrific.

The elephant episode was from Season 5 and the golf episode was from season 7 (you do mean the one where Marge joined the country club and Homer discovered he was a good golfer right?). Season 6 had episodes like Itchy and Scratchy Land, Sideshow Bob Roberts, Homer Badman, Bart vs Australia, Lisa's Wedding, Round Springfield, Lemon of Troy, and the first half of the Who Shot Mr. Burns 2-parter.

Red Dwarf. A show which, being generous, ran for nine series too many and keeps crawling back from the dead again and again thanks to its unshakable fanbase.

Pre-Riker beard TNG was god-awful. I don't know how they survived.

Right you are but I just read the quick synopses for each episode of season six and I still stand by my original post that season six was one of the worst and is where it starterd losing me. I made it to 2003, whatever season that was. With backs up the original purpose of the thread. I watched it because it was the Simpsons.
