It's less notable than before, but if he's cheated before, he'd likely try to do so again if left to his devices. Plus, name recognition. Even though Babe Ruth's records have largely been beaten, wouldn't you still want to know if it turned out he had robot arms the whole time?

I'm always fascinated by people who take such trivial things SO seriously. Hopefully that doesn't come across as condescending, it legit interests me to no end. You're one up on me, I don't even understand anything anyone in this thread has said.

Yeah, gaming doesn't matter but due to how life works out stuff that is really dumb can suddenly end up meaning a whole lot to particularly people. The documentary sort of broke this whole story wide.

I think a lot of it comes from people enjoying seeing Mitchell get his comeuppance. He was one of the first celebrity gamers, and has always come across as an arrogant, self-important jerk, hence the popularity of the King of Kong documentary where he is basically portrayed as a real-life villain, and the less than flattering parodies of him in Pixels and Regular Show.

And yet, didn't he break the score legit in public in the wake of the film?
At least he has some real apparent skills, unlike Rogers.

Mitchell has never been in a public setting when setting his scores.... at one convention, Billy was conveniently playing in another room separate from the public eye. The only known witness to Billy's score was Todd Rogers, who himself had all of his records removed from Twin Galaxies when he was outed for cheating

(Absolutely not suggesting Todd or Billy were, not to my knowledge or any indication, but just saying that Todd's referee buddy was a dishonest and thoroughly disreputable guy to the core.)

Billy looks like a business suit in broad daylight satanist cult leader or Toxic Avenger villain.

I know the joke, but it honestly wouldn't surprise me if Richards was good enough to try. He's a huge arcade gamer (or at least was) and owns/owned an arcade center. He did do that perfect game in one of the MLB: The Show games Ddn't he get hosed out of $1 Million because he was using his reviewer copy and got the perfect game before the street date of the game?

I think the reason he was hosed was because the rules for the MLB perfect game was "you had to do it during the regular season" and he did it before the game was eligible.

It matters because his legacy of those scores and the Pacman Kill-screen scores is what has made him the single most recognizable name and face in arcade gaming. He's been able to turn that into a self-marketing business that rakes in tons of money selling merchandise with his name and face on it. The motherf***er has his own hot sauce even. He gets paid thousands of dollars just to make appearances at gaming conventions. To then find out all of that success is based on cheating? That's pretty shitty.

I have never been able to figure out why getting the high score on an arcade game matters so much to people.

I have never been able to figure out why getting the high score on an arcade game matters so much to people. It was the high water moment for George Costanza. After that, it was the beginning of the end.

I have never been able to figure out why getting the high score on an arcade game matters so much to people. Back in time when arcades mattered, it was a big deal to arcade fans. Now, not so much.
