I have never been able to figure out why getting the high score on an arcade game matters so much to people. Because if you get into any kind of competitive game or hobby you want to be good at it? Valuing one competitive endeavor over another is just a cultural preference. I don't think it's really a hard concept to understand once you get over the preconceived notion that some hobbies/games/forms of entertainment are pigeonholed as lame and others are given lots of prestige. We both post on a board where people care, to the point of intense rage, about the person who holds the championship of being The World's Best Tight Wearing Pretend Fighter. I think that a lot of people would look at that and say, "I have never been able to figure out why winning a title in a fake wrestling match matters so much to people."

I have never been able to figure out why getting the high score on an arcade game matters so much to people. I've never sweated scores that much, but I can understand the appeal. It's like climbing a mountain, which typically has no practical value past the experience of doing it. It's because it's there.

Also, Billy Mitchell's Hot Sauce is just Taco Bell packets squeezed into a bottle.

All this Twin Galaxies controversy had me interested in what the world record for the Atari VCS/2600 version of Donkey Kong was. Years back,97 IIRC,I started playing a game of DK right when my then wife was going to bed. I will just say that I might have been on some special fungus that night. I noticed that I had been playing for a long time and hadn't died. Ended up playing for 6 hours before I died the first time. My wife woke up noticed I wasn't in bed, came out to check on me and her saying my name distracted me and I lost my first life.
I doubt I had a score anywhere near the world record. But think it is a game I might have back then been able to set a marathon record on.

Apparently Billy Mitchell is now planning to sue Apollo Legend (the video creator) for filming him playing Donkey Kong during a public event.

He'll be in real trouble when the judge states that Mortal Kombat on the Sega Genesis is the best game ever.

I have never been able to figure out why getting the high score on an arcade game matters so much to people. I dunno, why does the world record in anything matter to anyone?

I'm cynical enough to think that having a bunch of toadies like Mitchell has might have something to do with it too. You get a word record and you can probably spin it into free drinks at local bars for life and a booth at Comic Con.

A small sense that this accomplishment will live on long after we're gone. Steve Taylor wrote "Am I In Sync?" based on this premise ("paint a picture on a subway train, carve my name in a video game..."), which is written in contrast to a Woody Allen quote: "I don't want to achieve immortality through my work. I want to achieve it through not dying."

I don't mean to update this thread (this is probably the third one I've done recently, however I have good cause this time), but...
Billy is suing the guy who made this video and two others for a grand total of $13 million.
I actually have a Billy Mitchell story to share; he was invited to GenCon 2019 and hung around during the last day, where he was exhibitioning on a Donkey Kong machine. The guy had an entourage with him, as well as merchandise proclaiming his greatness, but he spent quite a bit of time away from the Donkey Kong machine to pal around with supporters. I didn't bother interacting with the dude given his poor track record and I was there on my own volition (I actually didn't have the passes required to visit some of the sites, and was just there for the yard sale), but despite his recent history, he still presented his innocence and had a cult of personality, signing autographs (for a fee, obviously).

Bad news for Billy... Life just loves shitting on this guy Two and a half years and the first time seeing this post, my initial thought was about this Billy Mitchell. Havenβt seen Eastenders in years (by choice), but I reckon this bloke is still down on his luck!

I can't imagine wanting Billy Mitchell's autograph.
Like even if you're a huge retro game fan (or like me was a kid when these games first came out), I can't picture a scenario where I'd want the signature of 'dude who excelled at Pac-man 35 years ago'.

Holy crap, the creator of "that internet movie" as Billy calls YT vids, was asking for 10K for legal fees to go to court within a month of the YT premeire. The NEXT DAY he had over 20K! A lot of people online hate Billy's guts lol
