In Austin's opinion, backstage interviews should generally conclude with the backstage correspondent throwing it back to the announcer desk rather than staring off vacantly into space. "One of my big pet peeves is when the announcer backstage, whether it is male or female, talking to the talent, asks the talent a question, talent gives the answer, if there's an interrupt, there's an interrupt, but the talent gives their answer, and it's an awkward feeling, and then, all-of-a-sudden, it's back to Michael and the guys at the announce desk. And the camera stays on the interviewer who got this awkward answer. You want there to be some heat there, and all-of-a-sudden, it's an awkward reaction to the person that's a part of the broadcast team. I think whether it's a male or a female, they should throw it back to the announce team because I don't think the heat, the point, or anything goes anywhere because I'm so focused on that weird look that the interviewer has on her face!" Jericho noted that backstage interviewers need to show more personality. "I think the backstage interviewers now, could they be, and I say this respectfully because they're just doing what they're told, could they be more robotic?" Jericho observed, "there's a lack of energy sometimes to the show when you don't let people be themselves." wrestlinginc.com/wi/news/2018/0218/637092/chris-jericho-on-wwe-backstage-interviewers-being-robotic/

I appreciate that seemingly everyone of note in the wrestling business has a lot of the same gripes and complaints with the product everyone else does, and that there's really no argument about any of this stuff not being a problem.

Unfortunately the only guy whose opinion matters, doesn't have a problem with it.

These guys always say stuff like this but current people usually say if you adlib you're not rewarded like days past. They seen out of touch with the current climate which is weird because Jericho has been around.

Whatever else can be said, Mean Gene Okerlund had a personality and charisma that has never been replicated in a backstage interview host. The way he would banter with the wrestlers and react off them added so much. I think the closest anyone has come is Joey Styles in the old school ECW.

I just don't understand why they're all so flat and one-dimensional. Yeah, yeah, focus on the performers, whatever. If someone is a regular part of your cast they should have some level of development to them to where their presence at least doesn't come off as a boring waste of time - not that I need a Charly Caruso character arc but give her a couple quirks or something, some sign she's an actual human being.
And that's not even just a basic writing thing, it also makes more sense for them trying to pass themselves off like a real sport. You're not going to see ESPN exclusively signing hunks of wood to handle all of the hosting duties.

I don't know why you need a Stepford Wife interviewer at all. Just have the announcer ask them questions like Vince and JR used to do.

This is why Renee is the best in the game and it's not even close.

This is why Renee is the best in the game and it's not even close. Just imagine how good she'd be if she weren't being micromanaged in every non-pre show segment she's in.

Oh how I long for the days of Lance Russell.
He'd get so worked up, it was awesome.

I like that Jericho realizes the problem isn't the on screen people. They can only do what Vince or Dunn want. Austin is sadly out of touch, and I don't mean that as a shot. He keeps pushing that people need to just do what they feel works when they can't these days. The type of micromanaging that goes on in WWE is the stuff he preaches about hating but because of his time away and star power never has to deal with.

It looks utterly stupid. It doesn't feel like a "sports"-style interview and it's not even something done in an entertainment-style interview. It's micromanaged all to hell and does nothing to forward the angle, promote the superstar or make the interviewer stand out in any way. It's almost designed to turn people away from the product.

I genuinely feel that’s a reason why Cathy Kelley’s been delegated to social media more than she originally was because she seems to be one that showed a glint of personality in her interviews so probably got less of a role for it.

Commentary and Backstage Interviewers are a lost art in WWE now. Nobody has a personality, they just spew exposition and nothing else. I miss the Straight Man Face Play By Play guy and the Heel Color Commentator with a face backstage interviewer to get the crowd hyped.

Yeah, Jericho's playing sensible as much as he can in trying to deflect the complaint off of the people involved without necessarily burning management at all. Jericho's been around through all the changes and shifts into the climate as it is now, so he knows full well what the reasons behind it all are. He probably respects Vince too much to run his decisions down on someone's show, but he's livedt hat life and knows exactly what's happening.

I loved whenever Mean Gene chastised a Heel for either cheating a win or getting involved in a match.

The annoying thing with Renee is that she's so charismatic it pours out, but she's not actually allowed the express it. He'll, when Coach was an interviewer he was alble to show something. Remember the Charleston?

This is why Renee is the best in the game and it's not even close. Her segments with Sami in NXT were amazing, so much chemistry between them, more than she has with her actual husband on the main roster. She's still the best but even she's more stilted on the main roster.

Austin is so spot on about the interviewer's vacant expressions being the thing a viewer remembers about a promo.
The amount of times I've just been like 'why are we just staring at her face' and immediately forgotten about the promo that preceded it IS TOO DAMN HIGH.

They usually go like this:
Bethany Brigstock: "I'm here backstage with WWE Superstar....the Hungarian Horntail....GRIGOR, who is just two weeks away from defending his WWE Western Hemisphere Championship at the WWE OUT FOR REVENGE event, tell me, Grigor, what do you think about your chances at the WWE OUT FOR REVENGE event when you face the number one contender, the Skull Carnage, Jordan Johnson?"
Grigor: "Well, let me tell you something Bethany, it has been an honour to entertain the WWE Universe as WWE Western Hemisphere Champion since I won the championship at the WWE ONLY ONE SURVIVES event when I defeated the Japanese rockstar artist Fujimora Fujisaki in a Money In The Pocket match...."
*camera cuts to the crowd watching the interview on the Titantron*
Grigor: ".....but the WWE Universe will see something even better when the Skull Carnage gets his title opportunity in this very ring on Sunday at the WWE OUT FOR REVENGE event"
Bethany Brigstock: "Grigor, thankyou for your time"
*Grigor leaves and Bethany watches him go....for 12 seconds*
