I've been watching some summer 2011 stuff on the Network and talk about a masterclass on how not to make someone look like a star.
The finish of the match has Punk win by Cena putting his foot on the rope and still getting a 3 count, yet the match wasn't restarted...so Punk looks like an ass by having to run around the ring with the WWE title and acting like rookie Kurt Angle, even though he won by shitty, overbooked means.
Then old man Kevin Nash jumps the barricade and lays out Punk with a powerbomb. Then Alberto Del Boring cashes in the Money in the Bank contract and wins.
Your #2 babyface, everyone...

The Summer of Punk, booked incorrectly? Glad we have a thread on here about it finally. Now, somebody get on Batista and basketballs. (Seriously, you are right, they booked him like shit; they don't trust what gets over that don't foresee getting over).

How about the part where both Cena and Punk looked like tired losers and Triple H had to make sure they didn't disappoint everyone by throwing them both back into the ring.

I recall the finish being telegraphed by the ridiculous, nonsensical way Punk goes for the cover. It was compounded by the fact that Punk hesitated for a moment to not go for the traditional cover.
Say what you please about Cena eating far too many Ls these days, but I do not miss the booking cartwheels they once pulled to avoid the guy taking a loss.

I still love that a Cena vs. CM Punk feud ended with Triple H vs. Kevin Nash.

I still love that a Cena vs. CM Punk feud ended with Triple H vs. Kevin Nash. I never got that. Triple H claimed that everything was done to help Punk. That was a bunch of bullshit. Punk got mainstream publicity and what do they do? The fed him to f***ing Triple H. Who was starting to become a part timer.

Summer of Punk 2011 could have been so much more. But they f***ed it all up due to incompetence and Trip's massive ego.

All I remember of that overbooked clusterf*** was how Michael Cole was trying to sell Kevin Nash coming through the crowd as some huge OH MY GOD PUNK’S GONNA DIE moment, and Booker T’s just like “DAS MY BIG HOMIE!”

For me this was Triple H's worst period, from the CM Punk feud to the Brock feud he was not doing great work. I think Punk and Triple H could've been great rivals if Triple H was a heel, but the insistence on keeping him as the "cool boss" through this period was awful. Triple H usurped Vince's power, got him fired, suddenly Triple H's degenerate friends are helping him fight his battles, all the while being "aw shucks" about everything like he's innocent,. I'm fine with the Triple H/CM Punk feud and the way their first match turned out with Nash interfering, but CM Punk absolutely should've been right about Triple H in the end and CM Punk vs. the WWE machine should've been the big feud for a while.

Triple H has a serious inferiority complex. Jim Cornette described him the best, that he was never the guy, he was always the one who makes the guy look good.

Yeah, HHH not turning heel was the absolute dumbest thing (well, aside from "I texted myself!"). It's so goddamn annoying when WWE has a story on their hands that has a natural progression and people would buy into it, then they go against the grain for no other reason than to have an pointless twist. Heel HHH would've worked fine; he's been heel, outside of one-offs and NXT, for 5 years.

Even if WWE wanted to have the stuff with Nash, Del Rio, and Hunter, there was absolutely no reason not to have Cena lose clean there.

The sad thing was they repeated it two years later! For whatever reason they think taking genuine things and ruining it is a great idea. "Oh the fans REALLY love Bryan and want him to have his moment? Get Orton out there to solidify another lame ass heel run".

This Punk angle is what got me to start watching regularly again.
I still "love" the finish to the HHH vs. Punk match at Night of Champions. Holy shit was that a mess.

Everything about that feud was just ass-backwards from where it was supposed to go. Like even without going in some other direction with it, like Triple H turning heel or something, there were still FAR better ways to get to Triple H / Nash, Alberto as champion, and the Miz and R-Truth thing than what they did.
One right off, Miz wins the tournament and is the one to lose the belt to Cena that same night. SummerSlam is a triple threat between them and Miz where Nash attacks Punk in the middle of the match then Cena pins Miz with his foot on the ropes, Alberto cashes in afterward. Miz has reason to believe there's a conspiracy against him, Punk has reason to believe Triple H is out to get him, Cena has reason to be pissed about Alberto cashing in, there.
