Ted thinks the idea is bogus, though.

quote author="doublet" source="/post/13944914/thread" timestamp="1520520051"] Yea the pay for teachers is so low compared to what they have to put up with. I remember the hell teachers caught 20+ years ago when I was finishing school. Can;t imagine what crap the kids put the teachers through now.[/quote] Teachers have it pretty good. Weekends off. Summers off. Holidays off. Snow days off. Nights free. Strong union.

I don't want to discuss the actual topic because I know that I can't without getting viciously political, but I have to say...
When I first read the thread title, I read it as "Billy Mays let some teach without a license".
To say I was completely baffled as to what that could mean or what implications it could have on society is a gross understatement.
For a brief moment, I thought, "Man, infomercials must be some serious f***in' business."

Most don't have nights and weekends off because of lesson planning and other responsibilities. Snow days are made up later in the school year. I have quite a few friends who are teachers. Not to mention, at least locally, teachers are still required to attend work on snow days for things like planning and what a friend of mine told me they call "professional development."

Add in that I don't think every state has a teacher's union. And at least back in the 90s teachers didn't get paid for those 3 months off in the summer.

They do have a union in most states, but in many of those states the unions have been weakened or outright attacked in various ways (the charter school controversy plays a key role in a lot of this in some places).
And yeah, lots of teachers don't get much time off: running clubs, coaching teams, second and even third jobs in some cases, the way things are structured you need the summer or you won't survive. A ton about how things are structured in education are outdated, and it's not great for people in the education profession.

Teachers do get taken advantage of because they are willing to take a worse economical position because they want a job that makes a difference.
