Yeah its a kudos to James Rolfe he's kept his personal and professional lives separate, and hasn't let the Nerd character bleed over into what he actually is.
In fact I think the Dick Tracy review might be the only time in his history where he actually seemed legitimately pissed off by a game and not merely exaggerating it for comic effect.

I will say, I've been critical of Spoony over a lot of stuff, but some of the stuff in the Channel Awesome document paints him in a more sympathetic light, namely standing up for people. When Lindsay/Nostalgia Chick pointed out that craft services on a filming day were standard, even for amateurs or students, Doug laughed it off, but Spoony ended up speaking up too to keep it from getting dismissed, so Doug relented. That and a few other things, I can see why people had tolerated some of his crap, since there does seem to be a standup guy in there. It just got increasingly mired, and obviously, the anger and some real douchey qualities didn't help matters, either.

Let's keep all that on the Channel Awesome thread, folks. Thanks.

One of my favorite videos Noah ever made was his review of the "The Thing" PC game. It's very funny and I really miss when he was in his prime and firing on all cylenders like that. I've seen it many times and it still makes me laugh to this day.
This video has bad language in it.

Video histories of video reviewers.
This is getting a bit meta for me.

I just found this video from December of 2016 called "What Happened To Spoony?" that I thought was quite good and asks some good questions of Noah.
I'm going to put up a language warning because I think there's some salty language in the clips of Noah.

Video histories of video reviewers. This is getting a bit meta for me. Books about literary critics have existed for a couple of hundred years. There's also at least a couple of movies and film-length docs on Roger Ebert, too.

His bewilderment at the booking was pretty funny. His later WWE Wrestle! Wrestle! rants with April got to be as long as the PPVs themselves which is just insane.

I've been binging this guy's videos as well and have the TGWTG letter reading in my "watch later" list. I wish I'd have known about the DSP one beforehand; I actually have a little more knowledge on his situation, considering I was exposed to him at an early stage in his career. I hid them in the spoiler tag since it's quite a bit and I know this thread's on Spoony, but I figured some might be interested in reading it. {Spoiler}{Spoiler}A person I follow on YouTube and now actually talk to once in a blue moon used to make trolling videos when I was in college, now he's actually a professional fighting game player and works in the videogame industry, including having worked for Iron Galaxy on Killer Instinct. His shtick was making fun of DarkSydePhil because Phil cussed him out once at a tournament.
I do recall some of the stats his episode either didn't mention. A Retsupurae (riffing on Let's Play videos, though a lot less active now) collab vid started the trend of vids mocking "DSP Tries It", which the collab itself was actually a response to DSP getting a ChipCheezum video pulled where Slowbeef (one of the people behind Retsupurae and is often credited as the first person to bring the "Let's Play" concept from message boards to YouTube) and Chip riffed on a clip of DSP playing MGS 2. If you go through DSP's Twitter feed you can find MANY tweets of him complaining about both videos and threatening legal action both times, which got shrugged off and nothing seemed to come of it. But there were several strings of tweets between DSP and Slowbeef.
Also, the "TIHYDP MGS2" video might've BARELY hit a million before it got pulled, like within a day or two, I remember having it in my "watch later" list and it getting pulled before I finished it. He went a LOOOOONG time trying to get these pulled because he believed they were not only using his footage and making fun of him, but he believed they were stealing views (and therefore, ad revenue). A lot of people tried to point out the discrepancy of him burying the videos as an insulting parody of him, but simultaneously a substitute for his own videos (not to mention his standing that his gameplay videos are transformative works but the TIHYDPs on his videos weren't).
Also worth noting, he REALLY skimmed the surface on times DSP buried his fanbase. The incident during the Kingdom Hearts stream where his at-the-time girlfriend sparked up the chat were far from unique (the only way that one was unique was due to the fact PandaLee started it). He'd constantly claim in vlog form (often before his streams, though he would upload those to YouTube as separate vids...and then complain he nobody was watching them) that certain trends he didn't follow were to blame for his numbers dropping (in the past he'd blamed SaltyBets, Twitch Plays Pokemon, Minecraft/Roblox, etc.). To be a follower/fan of his was to often be talked down to, especially if you didn't DARE watch every part of every video. He had a spell where he just quit playthoughs and whine that it didn't make sense how views would fall as the playthrough went on (ignoring the fact that this happens to literally every LPer, even big ones like Game Grumps or HYUGE ones like Markiplier and PewDiePie). Even if it started white-hot and still was getting decent views compared to everything else he was uploading, if the views didn't stay steady with the "Part 1" video or even rise (which, of course, they never do for ANYBODY), he'd just stop and say it was the viewers faults for it not retaining views.
He'd even ban people who didn't agree with his opinion on something in chat; I myself am STILL banned on his channel just because he used a whole blog to pronounce Nintendo dead (1 year into the Wii U lifespan and after a mini Direct) and hypothesized what Nintendo's 3rd party plan was now that "there's no way they're making anymore consoles after this disaster". I simply pointed out Nintendo wasn't remotely close to going 3rd party and would likely shut down before ever going full 3rd party...to which I was called a "stupid fanboy motherf***er" on stream by him and banned.
He also often claims that what he's doing now is "all he has" due to back issues. He has said himself he used to work a 9-5 hard labor job but couldn't now due to back issues. He has said he wants to get surgery done (and even once claimed that he made enough through Patreon and donations to afford it), but says there'd be no way he could stream during recovery and it would be too much of a revenue hit. And he was saying this in his prime. If he still stands by that way of thinking (full disclosure, it's been YEARS since I watched anything of his besides a few short clips here and there), there's no way he's getting it fixed now. His mindset has always seemed to be in the "immediate future", which is fine and all, but he's even said this is a medical procedure he'll need to have done at some point, so what sense that makes, I don't know. He's been so haphazard and passive about the back issues that "keep him from having a traditional job" that many people have claimed he's milking it for donations/sympathy.
That having been said, some of his anti-fans would go to insane extremes. I once saw a vid (right after he moved to Washington...which he claims he could've afforded on his ad revenue, but within a couple weeks he claimed he had issues with adsense on YouTube...whether that's true or if he realized in that span he bit off more than he could chew, I'll leave for you to decide) where they quoted him dropping how much it cost to move and to furnish the place, and then they pulled up prices for the furniture at the Walmart closest to his apartment (using his apartment tour vid to match up pieces) and added it all up to prove he was making it up, even though he was using his own money and not using any money donated to him through Twitch, PayPal, Patreon, etc. as he had not set those up. Like, to me, that's just nuts. The Time Cube one...now that was a trip. I thought that would just be some "teehee" lighthearted stuff, but that got heavy and stayed heavy pretty abruptly. A good chunk of this stuff is things I've never heard of though. I'm trying to decide which ones would be interesting and which ones would just...not be.

Yeah, he did that with a few movies too... which is fine I guess but I don't need to see someone rant for 3 hours about the robocop remake. I have friends that will do that to me... That said Spoony's Ultima reviews were great and it really painted the picture of just how awful Ultima 9 really was and how much EA completely buried the series.

I only really knew of Spoony from the Ninjas thing. Having watched DTRH, as much as I have sympathy for his mental health issues, I'm glad I didn't ask I'd have a pretty low opinion of him by now.
That series is great though, well researched, non judgemental and pretty even handed.
