I was just going through the Billboard Hot 100 Number Ones, and man it reminded me of how much 1999 sucked. So much terrible music plus lots of bad TV shows and movies. It only got worse for the next few years though.
I might be in the minority, but I think pop culture as a whole took a huge nose dive in quality in the second half of the 1990s. Oh well at least even 1999 still had some awesome things like Futurama and Family Guy debuting. Plus wrestling was awesome then!
I’d say one of the years in the early 2000s probably wins this for me. Especially once reality TV started getting huge.

I keep going back to 2004 as bad years for pop culture, especially for movies, music, and WWE.

Yeah, 2004 and weirdly 2007 stand out for me as particularly bad years, though offhand I'm not sure exactly why.

I mostly remember 2004 as the year the Red Sox went over the Cardinals to break their curse. For me, that’s why I recall that particular year being crappy. They’d make up for it in 2006, but man did my heart hurt.

I found 2005-06 to be very "meh" for most movies, music, and wrestling at best.

I actually thought 1999 was a great year for film, but to each their own.
I agree with the majority that the early 2000s were an awkward time in pop culture. I dunno if it was 9/11 fallout or what, but 2002-2006 was weird. Coincidentally my High School years.

But remember pop culture isn’t just what existed then, it’s what was popular. In 1999 Fight Club bombed. Meanwhile it was impossible to avoid The Phantom Menace.

Until watching the movie, of course.

For me has to be one of the years in the late 70s. Need to look and see what all shows were airing and what movies hit cinema in 78 and 79. But the pop music from those 2 years was horrid.

Also, who thought 2004 was a bad year? Movie-wise you had Spider-Man 2, The Incredibles, Anchorman, Freddy vs Jason, heck, even Shrek 2 was enjoyable, while in wrestling you had a whole run of good WWE ppvs (only truly bad one was Bash 2004) and TNA was starting to get really good (at least, at the time). Cant think of much memorable music, but American Idiot was a good album.

I wasn't too impressed with a lot of 2006-2007. Nothing too terrible but not a whole lot that stands out either.

I feel like...was 2007 when Soulja Boy broke out? Maybe that's why I remember hating 2007 so much?

The Nipplegate fallout made 2004 really boring.
The point being...the Bush years weren't great for anybody.

I can't pinpoint a year but the late 90s-early 2000s. Music was either crappy Nu-Metal, Pop-Punk or Boy Bands. TV was Survivor, Who wants to be a Millionaire and a 100 clones of these shows. Movies were teen rom-coms starring Freddy Prinze Jr.

It was definitely a very varied year for music.

i don't know. the late-2000's up to the present has been a blur of shitty pop culture (excluding movies and television). reality stars, musicians who can't sing without autotune, YouTube celebrities...

Really feel like most of the 90’s were not great in terms of culture. Prior to 9-11 things were so easy in this country we could afford to impeach a president because he lied about getting a beej, and the quality of our art certainly reflected that.
